im looking at possibly upgrading my vortex 4-12 to a 6-18 for woodchuck hunting.

I haven't shot anything over 100yards so far but some of my new woodchuck hunting spots are going to be 100-300yard shots.

ill be using a 223rem, heavy barrel, handloaded ammo.

anyone have experience with 6-18 scopes?

That will be fine for 300 yard shooting. Some prefer more magnification, but that is plenty. Some days 18x is a bit much for a super clear picture because of mirage. For varminting that isn't as critical, because you are not trying to see bullet holes in the black etc.

I have an 8x32 on my .308, but rarely use max. I have a 6x18 on my .22 Hornet, and it works just fine.

Are you going to be using a ballistic reticle or dialing holdover? Unless you go first focal plane scope, the hold over marks on the reticle will only work at max magnification; anything over 12 and mirage could be an issue. If you're going to dial up, you would likely benifit from a 6-18 if the glass is good. 300 really isn't that far though.

Pick up a 4-16 vortex viper hst, you will be more than happy with it! I have one on an ar and it's right at home on a .223... I use it to 810yds regularly!

the 4-12 I have now I have hold over marks and ballistic programs and cheat cards made for moving turrets.
