What's Better Than a 1911 or Hi Power?

It think that you are missing the beauty of the 1911. It is the slim nature of the slide and the shape of the grip that makes it perfect for IWB CCW.

To compare it to the blocky Glock 17 is odd to me.

Since you seem to appreciate both " hefty " and slim you might try one of the police trade HK p7s that are on the market now . You may or may not like it for conceal carry , but it is dammed near art in steel and with the recent trades by saxony affordable for a p7. If nothing else get one ( assuming you have some bucks to burn ) and put it up for 3 or 4 years , Its almost assured that you will be able to sell it for more than you paid in that timeframe .

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....I personally don't find 1911's to be especially beautiful, especially the basic military models.
If I want a "pretty" gun I buy a revolver. ;)

And for all of its "blockiness", the Glock is still slimmer and less bulky than the 1911....the numbers don't lie.
And the Glock is also smooth as a bar of soap on the sides (no protruding safety and such) which is great for concealment.

Besides, the 1911 feels like a boat anchor on the hip when compared to a Glock.

I happen to disagree . Numbers lie , advocates lie ( or twist facts at best ) . Yes if you measure across the the widest part of the grips vs measure across the grip of a glock 9 or .40 the glock measures slimmer . However the 1911 carries slimmer due to the slimmer slide and couture of the grips . This does not address the other failings that the glock has ( for me ) in ergonomics . Oh and before i am accused of being a 1911 deciple , I do own one and i carry a kahr or sometimes the p7 hk , rarely do i carry my 1911 or my browning hp .

The interesting and great thing about the 1911 and BHP is that they are perfectly sized for their caliber. Both slim, with enough weight and size to soak up felt recoil, but not too much as to be bulky. They are just well designed firearms that get the job done in a very elegant and effecient manner.

Who has their calipers handy?

What does the slide measure in width on the 1911?
At its widest the 1911 measures 1.37", and the Glock 1.18 even at the slide....I doubt that the 1911's slide is more narrow than 1.18 inches.

I've carried both pistols and I just don't think that the 1911 carries or conceals any better than the Glock....it's wider, it's taller, it's longer, and it's heavier....contures can only compensate for so much.

I think some folks are being fooled by the proportion ratios.....the 1911 looks slimmer because it's longer and taller.
It's like comparing two women with the same size waistlines, but one woman is 5'5" and the other one is 6'4".....the taller woman will appear slimmer than the shorter woman even though they have the same size waistline.

What are you measuring, because it certainly can't be the slide of a 1911? The width of the slide of a 1911 .45 ACP is .910, and the frame width is .755. The grips is only as thick as you indicate at the very widest point, and slimline stocks are available which can make it narrower than that if you like.

I've carried both, and a 1911 does conceal better. The extra barrel length has no effect, it's the width of the slide and grip that make or break it. The 1911 is flatter and simply sits closer to my body. The rounded slide contours help also. When you have a narrow waist like I have, and wear tailored clothes, a fatter gun makes a bigger bulge. And because my pants fit, and I have a proper pistol belt and holster, there is no sag to speak of from the extra weight, especially when I balance the gun with a couple of spare mags.

No, it looks slimmer because it is slimmer.

What's Better Than a 1911 or Hi Power?

To me, that's a Zen question, like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" There's nothing that my rational mind can come up with to answer that!

:D
