To add variety to my collecting fix, I have gradually added different calibers and platforms to my handgun collection.

My general criteria is popular calibers and platforms, classic guns, milsurp (WWII and newer), affordable, ammo available, whim and impulse, opportunity.

I started out with the basic .22, 9mm, 45, 357 and built from there. Here's my list:

.22 & .22mag: revolvers & pistols
25ACP: Colt pocket
32ACP: CZ-50, KelTec
7.62 Nagant: Russian Nagant
7.62X25: CZ-52, T33
380: Bersa
9X18: Makarov
9X19: Various pistols $300-$450, only exception is an Inglis Hi Power
357mag: Ruger
40S&W: Sigma & FN Hi Power
45ACP: 1911's & Ruger & Glock
45LC: Ruger (edit)
44mag: Ruger
10mm: Megastar

I am missing the 357Sig which I may add by getting a barrel for one of the 40's, or if I can find a Sig pistol on the cheap.

I have thus far ruled out the big hunting calibers like 480 Ruger and 454 Casuell, because of cost.

I am not really looking for ones like 9mm Largo unless I fall into one.

What am I missing? What is a must have in this type of collection? poppy

Try a .45LC, Colt SAA!
I can't believe I left out my Ruger Vaquero in 45LC. It's on the list now with an edit.

I appreciate the responses, but I have never gotten the S&W bug. My first revolver was a Ruger back in 1965 and I have continued down the Ruger road. poppy

.32 Magnum which also covers .32 long and .32 S&W. Not overly popular but a fun little round.

Also no .50 like a .50GI or .50AE.

.45 Gap although the .45acp does everything it will and then some.

I at one time considered the 32 H&R. Is that the same as 32 mag.?

I imagine the .50 is in the same category as the 480 & 454; i.e. expensive.

Can't get exited about the 45 GAP, maybe later in life. It's kind of like the 357 Sig., would get a pistol if could find one on the cheap. poppy

Poppy- Yes the .32mag is the same as the .32 H&R, actually it's the .32H&R Magnum to be proper. .32mag is a neat little cartridge that can be a lot of fun to play with, I consider it to be basically a reloadable .22lr as it can do most of the same stuff and then some. Lately I've been hearing a lot of talk about the old 32-20 but there are few handguns chambered for it. Another fellow recently informed me that he shoots .32mag out of his .30carbien Blackhawk with some success so there's a whole 'nother mess to get involved with.

You're also missing another one of my recent favorites in the .41Magnum. I find I like it a great deal and with reloading it is extremely versatile.

I'll second that you should consider joining the cult of the 41 Mag shooters. The neglected middle child of the magnums isnt one you should miss out on. If you dont load though, ammo cost may turn you off.

I also dont see one of the top runners on my wish list, and it fits all of your criteria and can even be ordered through the mail...the 1851 Navy. It's nice looking, many out there to choose from, and is a classic piece of American history.

Thanks for the great responses. My collection has been kind of haphazzard and these suggestions will give me a little more focus at the next several gun shows. poppy

Big Grizzley bore revolver's chambered in cartridges such as but not limited to. .454 casull, 45-70 govt, .444 marlin ( be it single or double action), .500 s/w, .500 lindenbuagh. etc.etc.etc. YOU dont like them because of cost but it still leaves a void in the collection.

S&W mod 10
I looked at one at today's gun show. Not pristine, some pitting in several places. The blueing might have been touched up. $275 from a private seller; I passed.
jmm
S&W Victory .38, and pick up one for me while you're at it.
I looked at one of these at the show also. $450, no military markings, holster wear. I passed.
You have everything. You may not buy another handgun.

Sincerely,

Your Wife
When did you move to Dallas?
Johnny
P38 - - Germany
I looked at a refinished P1 with police holster for $269 plus tax. This dealer had a boat load; almost bought one. Should I?
Johnny
Beretta 1934 and/or 1935 - - Italy
Had a 1934 and sold it for some reason (actually I think I traded it for a Russian Makarov).

Substitute for the P38

I think I would, if I were doing the WWII collection. As a purely accurate matter, certainly, the P1 is different, if only because of when it was produced. But if you are displaying in a case or shadow box, you have the general visual equivalent of a P38. You can always pick up an actual P38 later on.

Oh, yes - - I left one of the Allied powers out: France. You may want a P35 or P35A, or the old 1895 St. Etienne revolver - - Both were in use.

Best,
Johnny
