What's next after 357 mag?

I was involved with the .357 for most of my adult life. I lusted for a .44 mag but did not get my first till I was in my early 50's. My first .44 was a S&W 629-1. I fell in love with the .44 after the first. The second revolver was a 29-2. I've added a 29-8 MG and another 629 plus 3 624s and 1 24-3. At 75 I still love the .44. My joints don't ache and I still enjoy shooting the .44s.

There is one difference with me, I have been a hand loader for over 50 years. Of all the .44 mag revolvers I own not one of them has ever seen a magnum load, I see no sense in it. I like to hold the velocity down to 950 to 1050 fps. At 1050 fps those guns are just starting to get your attention but it doesn't beat you up. I enjoy shooting these guns at the range when I can get out. What really puts a smile of my face is when I see someone pull out a .44 mag and shoot about 6 rounds of magnum ammo then put the gun away.

I don't fully understand your motivation. Do you want a bigger bullet, more pain and recoil, bragging rights???? Do you plan to hunt with a pistol and need the ability to humanly take an animal. My 357 does everything I need, but I lust for a 41 because not every Joe has one. If your buying ammo that absolutely would not be the price effective choice... I shot a 500 sw mag and it's definitely not my jam.

I've pondered getting a .44 magnum myself. If I do it will be a Colt Anaconda when it comes out with a 4 inch barrel.

But I'm also considering, instead, a heavier .357 (Python) so I can enjoy firing heavier loads more often than I can my lighter King Cobra. By heavier I mean 180 gr bullets. I don't want to beat-up my KC, either. It's such a fine gun.

I have a .44 special now and load .44 Russian cases with 200 gr bullets to 750 fps. Nothing but pleasant.

Get a .44 and load it how you like. You don't have to fill the case with magnum powder if you don't want to. In a Redhawk a 200-240 gr bullet at 1000 fps will be fun without beating you up much.

Go ahead, make your day.

If I were you and looking for the next thing, go 45 colt redhawk.

I have been fighting the urge to buy one of those for a while now. I am hanging tough in hope that Colt brings out a .45 Anaconda. I guarantee this, if I buy that Redhawk Colt will most definitely announce that Anaconda, kind of like washing your car then it getting rained on..:D

I also owned 2 S&W .45 Colts, a 25-5 and a 625 MG. The 25-5 was very accurate as the previous owner had throat work done on the revolver, The MG was a shotgun and I sold it pretty quickly. Eventually I sold the 25-5 too. My biggest reason was I didn't like owning a cartridge that had so much air space in the brass. The .45 Colt did not handle the transition to smokeless powder very well.

The .44 is an accurate cartridge and likes a lot of powders. I haven't missed the .45 Colt though I would like to own a Colt SAA in .45.

Logically it would be a 44 Mag in terms of the next step up in power, or get a .22 revolver for cheap practice and plinking (here's another vote for a S&W 617).
