Ak 47

At the gun show this week end MAKO 90 s were going for 499 to 799. amaizing, since i paid $85 for mine many years ago. However they shoot well. Accurate at 125 yds. need minimal care and ammo is stil reasonable by other standards.

The way I see it, if you are sitting at a table of 12 or 15 people, and you say "Hey I just Bought an AKM yesterday", at least half will say "HUH?". But if you say "Hey I just bought an AK-47 yesterday", everybody there will know what you are talking about. So who really cares what you call them as long as everybody knows what the hell you are talking about.:banghead:

Names are important.

Names are important, but language has connotation and denotation. "AK-47" denotes something very specific and in settings where precise language was required you'd use that term sparingly.

....but this is an internet forum. Know your audience. Connotation is good enough. If you took it upon yourself to be snarky about every misuse of language on an internet forum you'd drive yourself bat***t.

Next time, how about just a gentle reminder to the fellow to use a more accurate term?

I've been looking at some of these "AK47ish" rifles for a little bit, and I'm more confused then when I was contemplating an "AR15ish" rifle. Did I say it OK?:uhoh:

Bulgarian is better than Yugoslavian, which is better than Romanian?

Clarify?

I'm thinking that a $600 to $800 rifle might be part of the plan here.

On GB, I see lots in the $500 to $800 range, so I just need a suggestion of sorts. Maybe give me a couple of "never buys", "might buys", and "good buys" to look for.

Thanks.

Aren't we really talking about AKM's (not AK-47's) lacking the critical 3rd axis! Not that I give a hoot what you want to call em.

Oh btw...here's my AKM it's a Lancaster Arms minus the happy switch:

Actually that "Shooters Package" 1975 AK from Classic Arms is looking like a hell of a deal. New barrel and everything.

Who cares what you call them, and who made them. I bought this WASR 10 last summer NIB and wasn't dissapointed. The finish wasn't great, and the wood was plain, but it worked. I can take head shots (or pie plates ) at 100-150 yards, and it has never jamed, broken, or failed in any way...

Find what you like, pay the price you feel good with, and enjoy it.

Life is too short to give a crud!!:)

I put on the butt stock pad, internal buffer, and an AK74 style brake...

Shoots great!!

the weapon is a romanian ak47 build at RATMIL factory, i have no wooble and the trigger is great and i refinish the woods

I just played with one today, and it was nice, but i was put off by how bad the wood looked. Now I know how to fix that problem :)

:):)I cleaned my WASR wood with 000 steel wool and then spent 2 weeks off an on rubbing boiled linseed oil into it with an old t-shirt. I let it hang daily in a closet, then gave it 2 weeks to absorb and dry. I then hand rubbed in paste wax with another tshirt, finally caking it on and letting it dry.

The next day I beagn the buffing of it with yet another old white t...

My stock feels good and water won't touch it...

I am a firm beliver in the power of linseed...

:)

Wow, alot more Saiga guys here than I would have expected....
IMHO I would say one of three; Polytech (All built to Chinese mil spec, with the exception of the full auto feature), Bulgarian (excellent quality) or the new CZ's (though I haven't personally had much experience with these they seem to be very nice guns for the $$$).
Only 'downfall' to these is that they are a bit more expensive than your Saigas or your Romanian AKs.

Well, I can see the Arsenal kool-aid has worked here.

Bulgarian AKs are not any "better" than any other AK. Arsenal has a fine marketing department that has convinced many people otherwise.

There are 0 Czech made AKs here.

I posed this very question to 'someone in the know' and they replied flatly that if it's not an original Russian made AK, then it's not worth spit - unless it was a Valmet, Galil or a South African R4, which are all basically AKs.

I wish I could remember exactly what he said about the Ruskie AKs, but it was something to do with the metals used in the receivers or the bolts. That's what happens when you drink and talk guns.

So based on this rather badly remembered piece of information - an Izhmash or a Vepr.

I have a converted Saiga in 7.62x39 and 16" barrel. Shoots great (for an AK)

If you lived near Pakistan, for around $45 you could have one hand made and a bandolier of ammo included.
Id say the Russian Saiga is a better choice than the other countries that produce them.

That's something I forgot to mention that Saiga really has going for it: furniture aside, it's a Russian made AK. Only other difference is the trigger is moved back to accomodate the sport stock, and that's fixed with a little work. ;)

And............

No one, absolutely no one,

Has mentioned the Czech CZ VZ 58, which,

In my humble opinion,

Kicks AK ass for multiple reasons.

A Saiga if you want a cheaper AK style gun becase you are financially challenged.
A Vz 58 is not an AK.
