I have seen my uncle drop a 1200lb. steer with his 22lr But that steer was in the back of a trailer. you keep the 22lr. as for me I would keep the 308 or even the 30-06

name one thing that cannot be killed by a .22 head shot or well placed body shot.

Ill put it this away. The day that you go after a cape buffalo or a grizzly with your .22lr PLEASE video tape it and let us watch it. I like my .22lr guns but for larger game the .22 is the LAST round I will be carrying. Ill bring my 30.06.

I agree with Paladin Hammer. The .308 is a great round and it wont kick the snot out of you everytime you shoot it.

Anyone ever read this..............??

About 4 times now. :D (I don't understand why this site double-posts at times... :()

The question was "pound for pound" and the 22lr is much lighter than anything else on the table... the fact that it overlaps as far as it does into "high power" territory puts it firmly in the running.

a .22 is the BEST all around cartridge? alright if we are going to be silly aout this I'll jump on the wagon. The .22 is not the best the .17 hmr is, it has all the advantages of the .22 and much better ballistics and penetration.
The small game arguement holds no weight in my book, I can shoot a rabbit or a squirrel in the head with a .30 cal and drop him right there, and have enough to eat. Or who saying I can't drop the powder charges through the floor and have a varmint killer. If some people think the small game arguement holds so much weight what if you are stranded on an island and there are no animals but insects? The .22 would be way over powered to shoot insects, you wouldn't have anything to eat!

My vote is 30-06

If we get down to correct considerations here, it is CALIBER not cartridges that should be discussed.

.284 (7mm) and .30 CALIBER are likely the most versatile from an "all around" standpoint. Within each, there are plenty of good CARTRIDGES (chamberings) that can serve multiple purposes.

If I had to pick only one cartridge or chambering for an "all around" rifle, it would be the ubiquitous 30-06.

:D You may be on to something with that .17hmr

The original terms were "pound for pound representing speed, trajectory, accuracy, takedown power etc". The .17HMR ranks pretty well on those terms.

The problem with so many popular rounds is that they are interchangeable.
It's really hard to argue the difference between 7mm RM and .270 Win for most people. A fraction of a difference here or there really doesn't matter.

I happen to like the "over 25 under 30" crowd. 7mm, 270, 6.5, etc.

My "one round" is probably .270 at the moment.
