What's the best all around hunting caliber?

I grew up reading Jack O'Connor in "Outdoor Life," and he always said the .270 was the best all around cartridge for North American game. I have other calibers, but my.270 is what I always reach for. I've taken more whitetail than I can count, hogs up to 350 lbs., and coyotes out to 450 yards with it. I wouldn't be afraid to use it on anything I'm going to hunt.

I'll say the 30-06 is by far the best CASE that offers all the versatility you'll ever need. Necked down and it's a great varmint round, necked up to 35 Whelen and throw 310 gr at 2400 fps.

30.06. It's good for everything from big bears to yotes by simply changing your ammo.

270 can and has done the same thing with one little bullet.

I personally rock a 30.06 with 180 grain remcorelokts for big stuff and a 270 with 130 grain for deer. Both can do the others job.

I changed my mind. It is obviously either a .293 Firestorm Improved or an 8 bore Howda pistol.

All around?

My .300 Ashehurst.... It's been to 6 continents , killed critters the size of a squirrel up to a ton and a half water buffalo in Australia.

Although not my favorite, the 8mm Mauser has been underrated and underloaded, for its potential. There are several available, especially due to WWII, and could be a good contender for the 30-'06, if various loads were produced.

I have hunted deer, bear, black and brown, elk and moose, all I ever used was my 243. now I know I am going to get some slack here, but I refer to who I think was the best hunter ever. Fred Bear took a polar, and kodiac bear at 20 yds with a bow. if that bow can kill something that large, than why do we need a rocket launcher to kill a deer?

personally, something in 6.5-7mm might be better for all around multipurpose application. they have better ballistic coefficients, allowing flatter shooting. they generally do no have as heavy of bullets but they also have lighter bullets, better for varmint and small game application. 6.5 swede would be my go to if I was building a multipurpose rifle.
