Whats the "Going rate" for a Robinson Arms M96?

Seems to be about 1200 with some rounds through them. I saw one that was NIB go for 1400 on Gunbroker recently.

They are wonderful rifles. I don't think they sold much because they were a $1200 rifle when everything else was $800. Now the "going rate" for so many AR's is $1200-1500 and the XCR is $1500+. The XCR has a few advantages over the M96, but does not look as cool or have the blackened stainless steel design that is super trick.

The quick detachable barrel on the M96 is probably the easiest design anyone has made. The XCR uses a very similar design but requires an allen wrench, while the M96 has a thumb latch to release it.

The M96 also has a 6-lug bolt, similar to an AR bolt but bigger and stronger. The XCR has a 3-lug bolt more like an AK or Sig 556.

Oh, and the conversion kits for the M96 cost way too much - rifle to carbine cost around $700, IIRC, and the top feed carbine was something like $2000 just for the conversion (not including base rifle!).

If you want one, I have an M96 rifle with only a couple hundred rds (I think less than 100, but I'm not sure) through it that I might consider parting with. Absolute mint besides being fired. PM me if interested.

I didn't know about them, but that top-feed model is pretty awesome.

Although I really wish they would sell me one of these... :(

My buddy has one that I shoot every chance I get; its a *very* smooth shooting rifle that had SCAR-like capability (in theory) long before the rest of the industry was even dreaming of it. Unfortunately the parts to really make it live up to its true potential were never put into production in any quantity. I don't know what the final number of rifles sold was, but doubt it was many.

My theory: back then, RA as a company was not nearly as well known as they are today. There was no way you were going to walk into a gunstore and find an M96 on the shelf, so there was little chance of the "average shooter" ever hearing of it, or seeing it. Today we have the internet. I believe, based on the overall level of chatter/discussion that the XCR has already surpassed the M96's height of popularity and sales rate. I have no numbers to back that up; just a gut feeling.

Buying one today, the obvious downside is that the parts are no longer produced. So if you buy one, just know ahead of time that getting parts might be a problem if you ever do need them, and accept that risk going in.

That said, I would love to own one. It is a very well thought out rifle, just like the XCR. In some aspects I'd say it is superior to the XCR; the trigger being the obvious example there.

Be sure that it has all the upgrades done to it, the M96 had recalls on the bolt/ bolt carrier and barrel release pin. The most serious was the release pin, if the seller doesn't know tell him to contact RA and ask.

If it doesn't have them done, get them done as I know a guy that was seriously hurt when his blew up because of this. I'm sure the last thing you want is an extra hole drilled in your head to relieve the pressure.

I was just chatting with a friend of mine who is all about the Masada. I told him that there was this rifle called the M96 that had all the features of the Masada with the option of a top fed and belt fed conversion. He didnt belive me until I showed him the Robinson Arms M96.

I do belive that the M96 was ahead of its time. Robinson Arms keeps hinting at a small run of M96s. But I just dont think they will ever catch up on the XCR-L and XCR-M to do a run of the M96.

I'll buy a few rifles for spare parts.

The M96 was based on the Stoner 63, which was invented in 1963.
It was used in limited issue in Vietnam with special forces.
It, too, could switch modes (but I don't think it could switch calibers, but I'm not sure).
In fact, it looks almost identical to an M96.

Average price I've seen 'em (three, total, ever) has been $1200. I kinda want one, but never saw one when I had the cash.

i bought one about 4 years ago, got it for about $1000,got a good deal.the best way to tell if its the newer version that has the upgrades besides the serial numbers is the circular vent holes in the rear sight hood.if it has the holes, its the newer upgraded version.i bought a spare parts kit last year, hopefully i wont need it.maybe they should have developed it further, instead of retooling for the xcr.the xcr is a great rifle, too, but the m96 is more unique.shoots smooth, handles well.maybe they will get them going again.....

The M96 is cosmetically similar to a Stoner 63 (intentionally) and has a similar mechanism, but it is a completely different rifle otherwise. The only interchangeable part between them is the buttstock, and AFAIK there was never a belt fed version of the M96. However, it is still a sweet gun.

If the externals are the same, and the internals are the same (or similar), it's the same pattern rifle. Which it is, RA never denied that.

I know none of the parts are interchangeable, and I never said it was an outright clone. But it is based on the Stoner 63.

How do you like it?

It seems that people are asking to much for there M96s. I see them on Gun Broker with ZERO bids at $1350-$1500. Can the M96 be had for $1100-$1200?

its real cool, fun to shoot, accurate, reliable, its not much different than firing any other 223, but i like it cause its different & you dont see them at the range.action stays real clean, only the piston rod gets dirty....you can also check gunsamerica.com,gunsinternational.com,auctionarms.com,maybe a google search can turn one up.the dealers by me have one or two, they want 1500+.
