OK, im looking for a pocket snub nose for CCW and have decided on the concealed hammer line of smiths but i dont know pf any other difference between the 642 and 442 other than price and color. Any insights?

According to the 2006 catalog that I have, the 442 has a carbon steel cylinder whereas the 642 has a stainless steel cylinder. Others can correct me if this has changed for 2007.

They're the same insofar as weight, pointability, capacity, and price.

The 442 has an aluminium frame with carbon steel barrel, cylinder, and crane.

The 642 has an aluminium frame with stainless steel barrel, cylinder, and crane.

The 642 once had problems with the clear coat finish stripping off with aggressive cleaners. I use Breakfree CLP and I have not yet had a problem. Do a search on the subject of the clear coat finish on the 642 for more information.

I personally own the 642 and I recommend it.

I have the 642 and am picking up my 442 today...pictures to come...The biggest difference is Color. Both aluminium one Silver one Blued/Blacked

With S&W revolvers you can figure that if the model number is a three digit number starting in 6 its stainless steel, if it 3 its Scandium.

Not sure about 4s (although I think a 4 means an alloy frame but not Scandium) and 5s ... and I think that a two digit model number starting in 6 is also stainless steel (but a 3 is not Scandium).

I'm sure somewhere online is a guide to S&W revolver models that explains this better.

I believe they're 100% the same mechancially, only difference is the finish. I think the 642/stainless can be had for a few bucks less because they make so darn many of 'em.

Exactly how it was explained to me in the store. I opted for the 642.

I ordered a 642 and when it came in I didn't care for it's action or lockup. In the dealers case was a 442 (the non +P version). I bought the 442 and never looked back. I recentely traded her for a modell 64 4"hb. I kind of miss the 442 as her action was "sweet". Yes, the 442 will require more maintaiance due to it's blued cylinder.

There are no major differences between the M442 and the M642 so buy the one you like better. Both will shoot the same and carry the same. Blue or Stainless, it's all the same except for the color. (and cleaning)
