Here's what I want:

1. All steel gun, including frame
2. 4" commander-length slide/bbl
3. Short officer-length grip
4. Bobbed grip/MSH - yes, a bobbed short grip, not a bobbed regular grip.
5. Very abbreviated beavertail ("chopped" tail like on some Paras)
6. Cal: .45 acp
7. Color: Black - some sort of corrosion-resistant, matte black finish to frame and slide
8. Thin grips
9. Dehorned/snag-free everything
10. Nice sights (tritium NOT needed or wanted, but wouldn't reject a build on that basis)
11. Very high quality, with all the bells & whistles like L/F ejection port, etc.

I can take or leave front cocking serrations; doesn't matter. Ambi safety not needed or wanted.

Basically, I want the Sig GSR compact, with the bobbed grip, and Para-style bobbed beavertail. How do I get there from here - which custom maker will do this right for a reasonable cost (say, under $1,110) in a timely manner? Or should I start with a GSR and have someone go to work on it? Who? So, just say you have $1,100 lying around, and you want the fastest/easiest way to get everything above in a quality package - go! :)

You can't bob the grip on an officer's frame. First, no one makes a bobbed MSH for the officer's. Second, if you did try to bob one, it would leave the spring too short for any kind of reliable ignition.

Are there ways around it, sure. But so far no one has tried it.

$1,110 won't even get you close to what you want from any custom maker that I know of.

My thoughts exactly. $1100 is not going to get you half the way there.

I would call Bob Serva at Fusion Firearms and see what he can do for you.

Bobbed officers grip? Short beavertail, no tritium, no ambi, 4 inch slide with officers grip??? sounds like an ugly gun.:barf:

Closest to what you're looking for without having a custom gun built Would be the Dan Wesson Bobtail Commander sold by CZ-USA. YOu would then need to have the Black matte finish custome applied by someone. I have one that I got for under $1K and love it. It is not a short grip, but it still conceals pretty well.

Wilson Combat will "round" the butt of thier officer frames and would likely accomodate your other requests. Your price tag just went up some though. FWIW, IMO a bobbed Commander conceals every bit as well as Wilsons rounded butt on the Officer frame.

Good luck!~

I think you are being unreasonable with your expectations in wanting this as a custom or even modified gun.

Just quality parts without the labor will put you near $1000 and if you want the services of a good-to-excellent smith to build this from scratch, the labor itself would be that much or more. Any 'smith willing to build-up a gun for less probably doesn't have the exprience to do a good job. (Officer's sized pistols are notoriously finicky to get to work reliably, especially with JHP bullets sometimes.)

Cost too much? Just what do you expect an American craftsman to charge for his skilled labor?

Well I guess I will definitely have to up my budget if I want this done - I hadn't thought that through. But the suggestions have been helpful, esp. the part about bobbed full-size grip being as concealable as a regular officer's grip.

So leave everything the same, but change officer's grip to standard - then how do I get there and how much?

I really don't want to print, because this will be a "tuckable holster" gun. Thus the high concern for a short minimal grip.

Refinish it in Black Teflon

Of you are willing to settle for Commander size, then the Dan Wesson is everthing you want for $900-1000. You will need to haveit painted black though

while reading you're description, the first thing that came to mind was the Nighthawk T3...they'll even bob the grip for you.

then i saw your budget and almost passed milk through my nose

you will have to adjust your budget up a bit...just double or triple should do it

I just wish there were more factory bobtail offerings other than the Dan Wesson. The DW Commander is a beautiful pistol, but that stainless frame is just too heavy I think. Anyone know where one might find an aluminum-framed bobtailed Commander-length 1911 other than a $2500 custom pistol?

Babybob

Yes, it's been done, and yes, it looks very nice.

However, the link to Harrison Precision has changed. Here's his new one should you wish to contact him:

I don't know about doing it yourself, though. It's been done but his is the only example I'm aware of with a bobtail on an Officer's frame.

And yes, it's time to sock the money away. Your perfect pistol will not be light on the pocketbook.

Hey Bob Rodgers,
Glad you joined up here. Hope you start posting some of your builds so people can tell what a real custom is compared to off-the-shelf.

How do I get there from here - which custom maker will do this right for a reasonable cost (say, under $1,110) in a timely manner?

$1100 might get you the parts, now you just have to find a good smith that will to put them together quickly.... for nothing. :D

Well, some of this is similar to a custom Wilson Combat I have about another month or so to wait on.

1. All steel gun, including frame - no problem
2. 4" commander-length slide/bbl - mine is 4 1/16" with the heavy match cone barrel, they have 4" guns as well
3. Short officer-length grip - nope, not with a full bobtail; mine's a Commander frame with a bobtail
4. Bobbed grip/MSH - yes, a bobbed short grip, not a bobbed regular grip. - the best you will get here is what Wilson's calls a "round butt"
5. Very abbreviated beavertail ("chopped" tail like on some Paras) - don't know, should be possible
6. Cal: .45 acp - no problem
7. Color: Black - some sort of corrosion-resistant, matte black finish to frame and slide - no problem
8. Thin grips - I ordered two sets of grips with mine, one regular and one thin
9. Dehorned/snag-free everything - no problem
10. Nice sights (tritium NOT needed or wanted, but wouldn't reject a build on that basis) - they have non-tritium sights
11. Very high quality, with all the bells & whistles like L/F ejection port, etc. - of course

I can take or leave front cocking serrations; doesn't matter. Ambi safety not needed or wanted. - no problem

Under $1,100??? Excuse me while I laugh hysterically. That's about a fourth of what mine's going to cost.

Even if you buy the Sig and send it out for the rest of the work, the gun plus the customization still won't come in under $1,100.

Good sights, .45 ACP, all steel, commander sized upper, officer lower. Only thing it doesn't have is a "bobbed" grip and your abbreviated beavertail. MSRP $1024. You can easily get one for less than that. But you're not going to find a bobbed version for that kind of money (and to be honest you're not going to want to shoot it either).

As I said above:

Well I guess I will definitely have to up my budget if I want this done - I hadn't thought that through.

So, ok, I wasn't even close to being realistic on that one - I realize that now. :) Would still prefer to keep it under $2,000 though.

and to be honest you're not going to want to shoot it either

Why do you say that?

But I'm *really* liking the Dan Wesson factory offering in the full-sized grip bobtailed. I'm thinking take that, but a good black finish of some sort on it, and then replace the beavertail with the one I want.

I also like the mini-bobtail on the short grip linked to above.
