Mossbergs have never worked well for me,but the worst was the 1st gun I ever saved up enough money to buy on my own. A Savage/Fox BSE. Worked all summer mowing neighbors grass @$3.00/yard to save up the money I needed.
Quit working on the 1st dove hunt and stayed at the gunsmith for over a year. I finally gave up on that gun after about 10 years and it literally spent more time in a gunsmiths shop than in my home.
An early Winchester 1200. It had the screw on the bottom of the bolt that held the plate that retained the firing pin, and provided the slots for the pump arms to engage. When that screw sheared, as it did several times, the bolt would literally come apart in the receiver. I owned it from the age of 12 - 16. Then I bought my first Remington 1100 which I foolishly sold to finance a benelli sbe1. It turned out to be the most expensive POS that I ever owned. I no longer own either one.
Easy. A Mossberg 500 in 12 guage. ....this gun was functional but very ugly and designed with a poor fit and finish. the perfect example of a cheap gun ...sort of reminds me of an AK-47 - horrible gun but deadly and very functional.
I paid around $200 new when I could afford nothing better. ...the worst $200 I ever spent.
My H&R would fall apart when you shot heavy loads out of it.
Literally fall apart, barrel and all...had the range officer laughing at my dad when it fell apart in his hands after shooting a slug.
Some 16 gauge wire wrapped around the forearm and it shoots beautifully now.
My second worst gun was a Browning 22lr with a screw-in barrel. ...looked nice, good fit and finsih but it could not hit the side of a barn.... bought this in the early 1990s for $245. Now, I never buy used guns since it is rare your can fire them first - I just avoid used guns instead..... someone is selling them and there is probably a good reason why they no longer want them....
Stevens Model 67E (pump 20). It would always try to double load shells. The gun smith always got it running again, but it was the same story over and over. There was only one push rod, and it caused the cheapo fore stock to bind up on the mag tube if you didn't stroke it just right. The mag tube had all the blue worn off from this. the push rod also hit the receiver if you pulled back all the way, that was ugly too.
Mossberg 20 gauge bolt action with a 'C-Lect' choke. Couldn't hit anything flying with it. Ran thru several of the clip magazines. Finally the choke and front of the barrel blew off.
for me, it was this POS. Winchester 1400 Ranger. Designed and built by Winchester's bean counters. Took the perfectly good 1400 and substituted many of its metal parts with plastic to save money, hopefully to compete with Remington. Gun was also sold by Sears and Roebuck under the JC Higgins Ranger name. Mine was a 20ga and slowly fell apart after a short time. Only paid $150 for the POS. As usual, I'm including pictures...
Winchester 140 12 guage. Not bad for the $200 but not good . I Hunt with an Ithaca deerslayer some too, if youve never used one they load and eject from the same hole in the bottom so if they jam you are just stuck for a while taking it apart to fix it. All of those adjustable compensated choke models are worth mentioning too.
Slugo... I'm sorry to see pictures of my one and only gun... exactly! What trouble have you had? So far, I actually like mine. But then, I've only put about a hundred shells through it. I'll concede the trigger feels rough, and the barrel seems to work itself a little loose. But there are threads in the archives that call this gun the cats meow. So what gives?
maybe as an occasional hunter, you're OK. But taking it out on a target range and lighting off 100-150 shells in the afternoon, well, that's another story. The plastic release button is the first to go. And guess what, no more exist. Sorry, the gun is junk...
The worst was a single shot break action .410 that I started with. Never hit a damn thing with that shotgun. Not one single clay. Even my dad could barely hit with it. I think he hit maybe 2 of 10. And it was too lightweight so it kicked horribly. Just an awful, awful shotgun.
