Can anyone identify this marking in the sling well of my Inland M1 Carbine?
It's an early rifle with a barrel date of 7-1942 and a ser. no. of 81XX.

Sorry about photo quality, but it's the best I could do with my camera.

Sorry, I can't help you out, but you may look around or post over on the CMP forums. Someone there may be able to help you out.

The makers of the stocks were usually identified by the mark in the sling well.

I can't make out your's, but if you get the Duff book you should be able to find out of the mark matches a maker for Inland.

hso, did they use symbols, or lettering? His looks like a circle with a bird shaped thing in it to me.

Thanks for the info, btw. I don't know anything about carbines.

Can you give me the complete author and title of the "Duff Book" so I can find it.

Many thanks...

Scott Duff is one of the best known authorites on Garands and carbines.

Here is his site. I believe the book you would need is The M1 Carbine Owner's Guide

There is also an OI marking in the sling well which means the stock was made by Overton for the Inland Division of General Motors.
