What's up with "cartouches"?

Why is it that on nearly every box of ammo it says "cartouches" and other stuff written in French?

Are companies selling alot of ammo in France or something? (And if they are selling alot of it, maybe they should print instructions on how to fire it at invading nations. LOL)

Seriously, why French of all languages?

Cartouches is French for cartridges.

Kind of like how the printer installation manual is written in several languages, so they can sell it in different countries (Canada speaks French somewhat) without printing a special box/pamphlet/whatever for each country.

Yeppers, you can tell a NORTH american targeted product...
it is printed in 3 and ONLY 3 languages, English French and Spanish.
Throw in Portuguese and you got most of this hemisphere covered.

Yes, French bashing can be funny, I've been guilty of it myself, but it's getting old, and only displays a lack of historical knowledge..
Do not confuse the efficiency of the troops with government politics. The French used to own large parts of the world, which they didn't get by asking politely..

There are 60 million people who speak French in France. There are 120 million people in Africa who speak French. French is not all about France.

A large part of Switzerland speaks French too, and nobody ever accused them of being faint-hearted soldiers.

We lost to our own policies and politicians more than we lost to the military might of the opposing force. You could say much the same of France in WWII.

A cartouche can also be an identifying mark. In the past, often an inspector for the military would put his initials or unique symbol on a firearm as a seal of approval of sorts. Some guns from this era are worth more if a certain inspector put his cartouche on them (and it can be authenticated).

Read some history on the French and their warriors, then go ask Washington what he thought of them circa 1777...

Ask Spain and the rest of Europe what they thought of Napoleon's troops

Then, go ask the Algerians what they thought of the Foreign Legion.

I could go on and on....

Long story short, Government policies, short sighted-ness, and a lack of collective will of the people to fight again gave us an Occupied France, not a lack of fighthing ability or spirit.

Had Mexico and Germany swapped geographic locations in 1938 the German army would have went through us faster than they did France. Sherman did the same thing to the south less than a century before and the south WAS on a wartime footing at the time.

Not trying to get political, but you could substitute USA for France and not be too far off the mark. You could substitute a lot of names here as well.

I agree with your sentiments mate but I'd like to point out that the French never beat Wellington once, not in all the battles from Portugal through Spain and into France. And we were simultaneously fighting another minor war in another continent at the same time, that barely got into the newspapers lol
