GEORGIA, GO DAWGS!
Here in the "freedom belt" where gun ownership is not only allowed, but encouraged, I have found a problem. South Carolina does not recriprocate with Georgia's Concealed carry permit. This is outrageous, considering that we are a border state, and that Georgia honors South Carolina;s permits.

I think that up until just a couple of years ago SC didn't honor Tennessee's carry permit. And the process for both is very similar, and all the Southern states have honored, if not formally reciprocated, each other's credentials.

But, what do you expect when your football team is called the Cocks ?

What's this "your?"

There's another team in SC, one infinitely better, called the Tigers. Best not get them confused. Oh, and even better: Clemson offers college classes in hunting, riflery, and shotguns.

If you think that's bad you ought to try getting a non-resident permit from New York. All I can say is pigs and cows will fly under thier own power first. A New York resident can get a non-resident permit from Pa. just by going to a sheriff's office in Pa. and get it the mail within 45 days no problem. New York State doesn't recognize anybody's permit at all. This really sucks as I live next to the border in Pa. but work in New York State which means I can't carry legally to and from work.

Sc just recognized North Carolina and still won't recognize Florida.
A real pain when I drive through there. And you know I'm not spending the night.
As for New York there is no such thing as a non-resident ccw.

AFS

Yeah, SC does have some crappy CCW reciprocity, no carry in any restaurant that serves alcohol, and my personal pet peeve, no open carry.

Too many friggin' yankees move down here to retire like it's the next friggin' Florida. Unfortunately, they bring tax revenue and votes.

They have to teach people how to hunt, there ain't no grocery stores that far out in the sticks.

Oh, wait, it's basketball season...

GO COCKS!

Hey, hank, up here in Yankeeland, we carry in bars and taverns, have universal honoring of all carry licenses of all states and foreign countries, and we open carry. :neener: I say, I say, I doooo declare, don't blame us Yankees, blame the mirror.:D

Actually the South lead the nation in gun control for many, many years. South Carolina had a one pistol a month law even before Virginia.

steve, why not just break down and get a Florida license? After years of cussing and pouting, I broke down and got one in 2003.

You're allowed to ccw in only two places and one of them is your home?

Not quite that bad. Just the usual places are off limits (gov. buildings, doctor's offices, polling place on election day) and the real PITA, any restaurant that serves alcohol.

One last thought: I agree with El T. The south as a whole has some bad gun laws. Many have been on the books since, or have their roots in, the freeing of the slaves. Remember how racist the south was? Most gun control was aimed at keeping blacks from effective self-defense.

Unfortunately, people of all colors still have those problems now.

You mean I can finally get a degree in something? I could probably CLEP a BA.

Maybe so, but at the end of the day, you're surrounded by Yankees and we're not, at least until they move here anyway.:(
I don't mind yankees coming to the south. Eat our food, hunt and fish, enjoy the south, just remember to leave it how you found it, unpoluted by yankee laws.
I never could figure why so many people leave the north because they are tired of where they came from, just to try to make the south like the place they left and were tired of.:(

Unfortunately, getting a Florida license deos not solve the South Carolina problem. I live in Florida and have a Florida CCW, I am from South Carolina and when I return to see my family (I am one of the few that have left the Holy Land) I am disarmed. ;) I would apply for a non-resident license but they don't issue one, which is particularly galling considering the length of time my family has been in South Carolina (250+ years), but they will issue a license to someone from New Jersey if they have lived in the state for a whole 6 months? Maybe SLED will get around to recognizing Florida this year.

I thought it was interesting that the only way SC will issue non-res permits is if you own land there.

Maybe if your family owns a big enough parcel of land they could sell/give you some? Like .25 acre or somesuch.

Yeah sorry about the yankee remarks. It's just that I'm a bartender, and it's snowbird season... and all these yanks and canucks are gonna drive me bonkers!!!!!!!!!

They're even trying to ban smoking in public places!!! Tobacco built the south! (Along with cotton) Gah!

Yup.

For those who don't know. SC does not honor non-resident permits. Only permits issued by your home State. This is were my NC permit has an advantage, it's honored in SC, and in every other southern State.

Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

South Carolina had a one pistol a month law even before Virginia.

From research I did a while back, South Carolina was the first state to have a "one gun a month" law. That was in 1975.

In 2004 the South Carolina legislature repealed that law. After 29 years of experience with it, the state and its legislature determined that the law did nothing to affect violent crime. All it accomplished was to inconvenience honest people and criminalize a few for unintentionally violating that law.

Main problem? S.L.E.D. State Law Enforcement Division. They are the regulatory commission in the state. The Lawmakers don't trust their selves to make every law cut and dry or clear. So they put S.L.E.D. in charge of the details. In the past few years, the legislature has passed laws countering mandates S.L.E.D. put in place. BTW, S.L.E.D. does not trust citizens to defend their selves or carry weapons.
One of the main requirements for recip is that the other state must have equal or greater CWP training for recip. SC requires 4 hrs. classroom and 4 hrs. range time.
What does GA require? A form filled out and fees paid?
Honestly, after seeing what I did in my class, I firmly believe that every state should require at least a shooting session to qualify for CWP. If you can show that you are already qualified, then skip it. Just remember, not everyone that wants to own a gun and carry it for protection is as gun savvy as members of THR.
BTW, GO COCKS
My wife is a Clemson grad, starting classes at USC on Monday.
I, on the other hand, work at USC. Yes, I'm a Gamecock! By employment only.

Not quite that bad. Just the usual places are off limits (gov. buildings, doctor's offices, polling place on election day) and the real PITA, any restaurant that serves alcohol.

Even here there is an exception. Public restrooms at interstate rest stops and state parks allow CWP. Especially after a rash of crimes were committed in these locations in the past.

If all they need to recipricate is equal training then they ought to add Ky, we got 8 hourse of training to get our permits.

I own a home in SC and GA and when it arrives my GA permit will be good just about anywhere in the South except SC. Lived there for 9 years but the state legislature swings like the breeze. Didn't get a lottery until it was finally put on the ballot and the people were allowed their say...

Florida requires 4 hours of class room with a written test. We also go the range and show that we are able to handle a firearms safely by firing one shot at a target (depending on how many folks are in the class before we go to the range this takes an hour or so). Granted, I think everyone should get more training or range time, but I personally think the above is enough considering we are talking about a right. I would ideally like Vermont's or Alaska's rules, if you are not a felon, etc you can carry, no license from .gov required.
