I'm probably going to have to make a quick one-day trip up the coast, from Florida through Georgia and S.C.to pick up my daughter in North Carolina. I don't have a Florida concealed carry permit, so I was perusing the Packing.org site to try to see what kinds of things I need to be alert to.

My main problem is that I really don't get all the legal jargon that goes along with the site. Since my main focus isn't obtaining a permit in the various locales, I don't need all the information there on how to apply, etc. Is there anybody who can 'splain the legal mumbo-jumbo in plain English?

For instance, I understand that once I get to N.C., I have to have my handgun in plain sight (i.e. on the dashboard), or locked up with the key not readily accessable (i.e. not in the lock). I'm pretty sure also that N.C. is an open carry state. Does that apply to non-residents? Can anybody carry openly? And what are the laws for vehicular travel through Georgia and South Carolina?

If anybody can help, I'd really appreciate it!

If you look at each state's information page, scroll down and there is a section for car/gun laws and carrying without permit, that details how that state allows carry without permits and in cars while traveling. It also gives links to various agencies (like state police) you can call and ask questions.

Beware that you may not get the correct answer by calling the highway patrol however. Try calling the attorney general's office of each state.

Here in South Carolina the weapon must be in the glove compartment or the console. You must have a permit with a reciprocal state to carry concealed. We're not allowed open carry.Hope this helps,Have a safe trip.Ken

I would not carry openly in NC. There is a law on the books here about going about armed to the terror of the public. In other words, if someone decides they are frightened seeing you carrying a handgun openly you could have an unfortunate meeting with the local constabulary.

The transportation laws here are a bit unclear. That is the main reason I initially obtained a concealed handgun license. The law says you can have a handgun openly displayed in your car, but I would be hesitant to transport that way for a couple of reasons.

What if you get pulled over, and your openly displayed handgun on the seat next to you slips under some papers or falls down between the seats? Illegal concealed weapon.

What if you are driving along the highway with your handgun on the dashboard and someone driving past you calls 911 reporting a person with a gun? Remember "going about armed to the terror of the public"? Many people have no experience with guns and ignorantly view them as inherently evil. The Higway Patrol/local law enforcement would not likely treat such a report lightly, and you may find yourself stopped along the road with some very anxious officer(s) approaching your vehicle.

I would recomend reading the NC information page a little more. It should tell you everything you need to know. Packing.org is probably one of the best websites on the internet for information on carry a firearm.
