I handload, so most of my practice rounds are mine (230 gr. RN lead, 5.5 grains WW231), but when I shoot factory ammo it is:
plinking and fun shooting - either Speer or Winchester 230 ball;
serious biz - Remington 230 gr. Golden Sabres.
Cheapo is Winchester white box or S&B ball. I've also always had good experience with Blazer in 45 ACP.
My preference for defensive stuff is standard pressure 230 Gr or 200 Gr Gold Dots or 230 Gr Winchester Rangers but I wouldn't feel under-armed with Hydrashok.
with Factory I like UMC yeller box, or Winchester White box in 230 ball, carry is 230 Fed Hydrashoks
when I roll my own it is a H&G 68 200 gr lswc with 5.2 - 5.7 gr W 231 and CCI primers in Win Cases
For plinking I use either Federal AE 230 gr or Rem UMC 230 gr.
For a long time I carried Speer 200 +P Gold Dot. Lately I 've been carrying Cor Bon 230 +P. I would like to try their new Power Ball round as soon as I can find it.
Social ammunition requirements (IMNSHO): it must be reliable, in that it feeds, fires, and ejects WITHOUT EXCEPTION; it must launch the projectile at similar velocities for each shot; it must not blind the operator; it must make a hole.
Hole-making is a completely different subject..................
My reloads usually for practice/plinking. Sometimes S&B or Federal American Eagle.
185 grain JHP for defense, not too concerned with brand. And some of them are reloads, a good fast mover. Not too worried about using reloads as defense. In this state any use of a weapon will result in court time, I don't believe the reloads will be an issue.
For self-defense, 230gr. Hydra-Shoks. I used to use Speer 200gr. "flying ahstrays," Winchester Silvertips and Federal 185gr. JHP's for different pieces; now, I feed them all the same Hydra-Shok.
For practice, either 230gr. FMJ or 200gr. LdSWC reloads. When I qualify for my CHL Instructor's certficate, the DPS limits ammo choices to specific brands of factory hardball, so I use Winchester white box.
I am a believer in the light and fast stuff by RBCD.
45 ACP 90 gr. TFSP 2036 fps / 828 flbs
45 ACP 115 gr. TFSP 1650 fps / 700 flbs
Which also means that I like the 90 gr version. MUCH cheaper than the MagSafe I use to use, more reliable with its' round nose profile, and loaded to standard pressure rather than +P+. www.rbcd.net
For plinking I reload my own, and that load is a 230 gr. RNL bullet and 4.9 grs. of Winchester 231 powder. For self defense I use Federal Hydra-Shok 230 gr. JHP.
