I have the same 35rem Its a marlin 336 right? The only issue I have with it is the lack of blood trail with the Hornady Leverevolution.

"HOG " gun?

I can't comprehend the concept. Does a hog have super powers? My favorite "hog " gun is the one that is in my hands when one shows up. 22LR works when you pick your shot.

Well, not to wander, but as a kid on the farm: Grab one ear, step over the back, strike between eyes with 10 lb. hammer. Cut throat. Did 1/2 dozen or so every November. 22's were saved for the steers. Hog brains were used so no lead.

Have dumped hogs with just about every long gun I own, plus a few sidearms.

M1Carbine
SKS
AK
AR
Shotguns
bolt action rifles in a few different calibers
lever action rifles in 4570/30-30/357magnum

Have sold/traded off most of the above.

My favorite hog dumpin stick = The M1A-A1 and M14S Tanker.

Iron sights, optics, NVS, with and without cans.

All types of ammunition. ( Milsurp FMJ using 20rd mags for lower cost eradication, to various "match" offerings at longer ranges, to several different loads specifically designed for hunting medium and large.)

I like to try out various big game loads on hogs to get some real world info on how they perform through my rifles in field conditions.

The same rifles are also my coyote, deer, black bear, and elk hunters.

More or less, this type of rifle is my all around utility, general purpose, hunting rifle for everything except small game.

My favorite is probably my 1940's Win 1894 30-30 with a peep sight. Most of my shots are less than 100 yards (and sometimes only 10!) so no need for a long range gun, plus I love the feel of carrying the gun, it's history, and the challenge of shooting with sights. Doesn't hurt to know it's got seven rounds in it too for the times I run into several hogs at once. Plus in heavy brush the carbine beats a long scoped gun.

Depending on my mood I'll also take my Win M70 30-06 or Tikka T-3 270, both with 3-9 scopes. As others have said, many guns work on hogs so it's mostly what you feel comfortable with.

Amen brother, and shoot till they are gone or I am out of ammo.

If I had to pick one rifle and/or one handgun, I would have to say that the rifle that has dropped the most for me is my little Ruger Compact in .308 loaded with factory Rem CL's. In a handgun it would be my 41mag loaded with the 200gr Remington SJHP.

Either one, and plenty of others will get it done up right.

My AK or either of my Savage .30-06's. I actually prefer my Axis over my 111 when it comes to hogs.

My purpose built hog hunting gun is a Marlin 336 chambered in .35 Remington. Mine is customized with a short 16" barrel and a Leupold 2.5 power, forward mounted Scout Scope. Remington 200 grain jacketed softpoint ammo.

I took my 215 pound red/brown crossbred Russian/Razorback Tennessee wild boar at 52 yards from a standing, unsupported position down a hill. The bullet penetrated the boar's left shoulder, went through its left lung, directly through the center of its heart, out the right lung and out the right side of its rib cage. He dropped right where he stood. That was my goal. 10 hours driving there, two days, two nights, 10 hours back home, one shot.

I didn't want to hunt with anything lighter or anything heavier. As it was, I ruined some meat with the shoulder shot, but I still got plenty of breakfast sausage and pork loin and ribs and ham steaks and chops.

I found it very rewarding to customize my rifle for the specific purpose of wild boar hunting.

Marlin 336 in .30-30 (open sights) and a 10mm Glock on my side.

And here in Missouri the conservation department wants us to shoot them on sight.

Fun times.

Of all the cartridges and platforms I have taken hogs (and I have used several), the ones that dropped a hog fastest were:

an Encore pistol in .444 Marlin
an Encore pistol in .45-70 Gov't
a Weatherby Mark V in .270 Win

Those three netted impressive terminal effect. Of those three, the .270 Win takes number 1 ranking. The effect was instant. The .45-70 Gov't was second best, with near equal effect. The .444 Marlin was not bad, just not as-effective as the prior two. In truth, all three were so effective that the difference in dropping the hog would have to be measured electronically.

What's Allowed ??

The biggest factor in selection may depend upon what restrictions might exist in the state of Hawaii.

Personally I like a .308 because it's plenty of gun and ammo is readily available just about anywhere.

If range is expected to be less than 100 yards, a 30-30 is a likely candidate.

Here in central Texas my shots average around 60-80 yards, max is probably about 150-175.

But, check on the legalities in Hawaii before making any purchases or plans!

I like the Just Right Carbine. It's, well, just right in pistol calibers. 9mm, .40 S&W, and 45ACP. Now just thinking, 10mm out of a 16" rifle barrel sounds amusing.
