What's your recipe for 45 Long Colt Cowboy action reloads?

Red dot fills more space in the big case and will be less position sensitive than bullseye due to that fact. It's also much easier to let an overcharge slip by with the bullseye, but since attention to detail is key that really shouldn't be a problem. Bullseye is a faster powder also, but there are exceptions where this is reversed. I would personally much rather use red dot in the big forty five case. You should actually be able to find plenty more loads for the colt with red dot than bullseye whether up to date or not the data is still use able.

There is nothing wrong with EITHER powder in 45 colt. Use what you have and be happy with it.

Is your hornady brass new or once fired? I would measure the brass length and make sure it's proper length and not short. I'm not sure if the use the short brass in Leverevolution 45 colt ammo or not but they do in other calibers.

Geez now I am confused all over again, so your saying Red Dot is a bigger flaked powder and fills the big case better ? And they are both position sensitive but Red Dot is less position sensitive ? Well it's a good thing I own a 9mm and a 45ACP otherwise I would have a pound of useless powder on my hands for what I am trying to accomplish! This must be the hardest bullet to reload of them all or at least it's beginning to seem that way to me and all because the right powder is unavailable everywhere I look, "I would have to pick this bullet" to learn how to reload on

It's actually probably the easiest of them all to load for. You can use either powder safely, but just because there is load data available for a bullet/cartridge combo does not necessarily mean that it's a good combo, but rather you can safely use it if that's what you happen to have on hand. I currently have about 50 boxes of 45 colts loaded up and although unique is my go to powder for the cartridge I have some loaded with red dot, green dot, blue dot,, aa#5, 700 x 800x, clays, and even zip! Probably a powder or two that didn't come to mind... Oh yeah 2400 is one that I forgot as is trail boss! Anyway my point is that for instance there is some pretty decent data for the cartridge with zip so I decided to load a couple boxes with it...well the data is there, but it's just too position sensitive in that case to be worth using.

Just use what you have and you will have fun til you can get a more suitable powder. As I recall my Lyman manuals have a pretty decent amount of data for red dot, but I'm not ssure what is in them for bullseye. I'm house sitting for a week for someone so I can't get to any of my manuals to check for you.

Being a conversion the 6 grain charge is where I would start and work up to 6.5 -6.8 or so if you need more pressure. A 7.5 grain charge is recommended by alliant as a max charge with a 200 grn lead swc, but this is not for conversions. I would personally stay at 6-6.5 in the conversion with BE and a 200 grn bullet. Although I have all the Lyman manuals my preferences are their cast bullet handbooks because almost everything I load and shoot I cast myself.

No more replies will be necessary I am giving it up It's not worth the aggravation. Since there is no powder to buy that is correct one to use, I am selling this equipment and forgetting it. The aggravation of this is just not worth saving any money, it's easer to just be robbed buy the people selling the dam bullets and forget the frustration of learning! Not enough good data for the powder that is available and to many variations of opinions on what's correct and what's not. Now you don't have to say anything about it to me anymore nether does anyone else.

Well then I guess you should throw a temper tantrum and take your ball and go home. Never mind the fact that you have been told several times in this thread that either powder would work fine.

You are simply hell bent on making things difficult for yourself.

NO I just don't wont to blow my Dam hand or head off due to some bad information. I might add not everyone agrees with the use of ether powder mentioned her and keeps saying get Trailboss or Unique, well you show me where some is and I will buy it ! Yes I am the type of person who second guesses myself but in this case with dam good reason because I am new to this and the right powder is not available, and I don't need smart ass BS, if you want to help then help don't criticize someone who is only hell bent on not making a deadly mistake!

I have already tried to help you multiple times, as others have.

What you fail to realize is that the powders available to you are not "wrong" powders. One day when you have more experience in reloading you will look back at this and laugh. You are truly making a big deal out of something that isn't.

Both those powders are perfectly acceptable. Everyone has a favorite and that's what they are recommending to you. Try and understand that, that's how reloading is. Everyone thinks their favorite is best.

Buy your bullets, follow the published data and have a good time. Just relax and don't get so bent out of shape.
