I've been trying to figure out when the laws were passed creating "gun-free zones" in federal facilities, schools, etc.

I've been able to find the laws themselves:
but it doesn't list when they were passed and/or went into effect.

The reason I would like to know when these laws were passed is that if there were fewer school/postal shootings before the laws, it would support the idea that "gun-free" zones do not make people safer.

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure that the gun free school zone deal was shot down, but the libs continue to act like it wasn't. I remember someone figuring on a road map, trying to stay 1000feet away form every school was impossible.
I could be wrong.

Guns in the school have not always been the cause of problems. In 1975,at the highschool Iwent to, if you drove to school you had a rifle or shotgun in the car during hunting season. taking them in to shop class to compare,repair,show-off was not uncommon, and Nobody got shot! If we broke any laws, we're sorry. Jim

The first Federal act was shot down by the Supreme Court but Congress passed another act referencing the Commerce Clause. The second act is current Federal Law.

What it amounts to is that if you don't have a CCW, you must have all firearms unloaded and locked up if you drive within 1,000 feet of a school.

Gun free zones

I llive across the street from a local high school. My residence falls well within the "zone".

There has been much local discussion about carrying in your car as well as CCW.A fair reading of the state statute indicates CCW is permitted within the zone but not ON school property and carry within your auto is also permitted as cars are an extension of your domicile in Louisiana.

Essentially you may perform any constitutionally protected activity within the zone.Otherwise how could people living across the street from the school keep firearms on their property or in their homes or cars.

Pretty much another feel good law but not a crime stopper.

You might want to re-read that statute again. It says that in Revised Statute 14:95.2 :

. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to:

(1) A federal, state, or local law enforcement officer in the performance of his official duties.

(2) A school official or employee acting during the normal course of his employment or a student acting under the direction of such school official or employee.

(3) Any person having the written permission of the principal.

(4) The possession of a firearm occurring within one thousand feet of school property and entirely on private property, or entirely within a private residence, or in accordance with a concealed handgun permit issued pursuant to R.S. 40:1379.1.

(5) Any constitutionally protected activity which cannot be regulated by the state, such as a firearm contained entirely within a motor vehicle.

Clearly, if it is contained in the vehicle and safe, then it's fine. Also, I noticed a change since the last time I looked in #4 there. We can carry on school property with a CHP? I never saw that before.

The Zone

Phaetos I think the key phrase here is "any constitutionally protected activity" which would seem to include open carry which is prescribed by the state constitution.

The ROTC group practices right in front of my apartment and you should see the looks of some people when they see all these kids with rifles and bayonets!

Wyoming would be my choice as my in laws live there in a small town called Greybull. It's about 55 miles east of Cody right at the foot of the Bighorns.Get off the beaten path and land can still be had for fairly reasonable prices.Just be sure you can get water on the property!
