you are wasting your time in that situation. hard to concentrate on sight alignment and trigger squeeze when in a "moment of panic".

suggest you go to the range, or other safe place, to dry-fire. cheap and realistic!

Yes. As a perfectly healthy 25 year old with no cognitive deficits, I do double check my guns 3 or 4 times sometimes.
I also double back to make sure my door is locked every so often after walking to my car.

Not a sign of "short term memory loss." More of a psychological thing.

I actually think I have Nominal Aphasia. Nothing to do with my dry fire issue but it is in regards to memory.Though how I never forget nominal aphasia makes me think I don't have it. . . .
You lose the ability to speak every now and then???
That is serious and you should see your primary physician.

No, because I check every time that it is unloaded. I still don't point it at anything that I'd cry over if it got destroyed though.

No. Just be in the moment while you're clearing the gun. Don't have ammo anywhere near it.

Then dry fire away. Most important thing is to be very "in the moment" while you're clearing it. I go to this mental state whenever I'm doing something vital with a firearm, like putting it in a holster.

Distractions and not being consistent is when we mess up.

EXACTAMUNDO!!!! Well said. I agree that paying attention at these moments is really important. If you are going to handle a firearm, take the needed time to do it right. If you can't then put it down and come back to it.

Never wonder if the gun is loaded. The first thing I do when I pick one up is check to see if the snap cap(s) is in there. I have a few guns I keep snap caps in and with nobody around to change that I still check every time of the gun's status.

If people do this with a CCW gun, it could be much more dangerous, as many CCW handguns often have a round chambered, ready for DA, or is this uncommon?
Being in the process of considering a first handgun (.380 or 9x18), often seeing a round in the chamber must appear very normal to lots of people, even though the .308 rifle snap caps I've bought/seen are dark red.
