when ice cream truck drivers go bad....

I was always leary of ice cream truck drivers.
I was barred from the ice cream truck when I lived "in town". I used to go out and buy myself a popsicle every time I heard him come down the street. My Rottweiler used to go out with me, and put his front paws on the counter and stick his head in the window.
I guess the guy didn't like that. :D

"It is not a normal or legal thing, anywhere in the country to carry a handgun without a permit while selling ice cream," said Sergeant Eric Holtzclaw, a spokesman with the Enid Police Department.

I suppose Sgt. Holtzclaw has done extensive research on the subject of ice cream truck drivers going armed.

Holy Father, that was naughty. :p

Since I'm no spiritual leader, my dry comment is that the Good Humor Man was in bad humor that day.

This is chilling news...

This really frosts me. I hope they give that guy the cold shoulder and a chilly reception when he shows up in jail.

"I was always leary of ice cream truck drivers."

Dennis Leary, Tom Leary, or Leary, Georgia? :D

Ordinarily I would be shocked and appalled by this, but having lived in Oklahoma... well... somehow this isn't all that amazing.

Just FYI
According to the article in The Oklahoman several witnesses did see the woman throwing things at the driver prior to the shots being fired.

Also there was a quote from the Ice Cream Co. owner a mister Rodriguez
" We don't allow our drivers to carry guns the truck is the weapon, if there is a problem you get in the seat and drive off."

This came right after the same owner claiming that ice cream trucks are robbed frequently.

Well, it is certainly worth noticing that in that sentance, the Sergeant also went out of his way to make it clear that the knucklehead was not a permit holder.

"It is not a normal or legal thing, anywhere in the country to carry a handgun without a permit while selling ice cream,"
Now that I have stopped laughing, I feel it is important to note that you can legally carry a handgun without a permit while selling ice cream in Vermont.

I DESPERATELY need to know what kind of argument they were having. What could prompt an 18yr old girl to begin throwing things at the good humor man?

Saw a second article today that said the woman's friend came to intervene and the ice cream guy fired into the ground. The woman did not seek treatment.

Another article also said that he was well out of his normal route but did not speculate as to why.

One Injured, One Arrested In Ice Cream Truck Shooting
Driver Accused Of Assault With Deadly Weapon

UPDATED: 11:08 pm CDT August 2, 2004

ENID, Okla. -- A woman was slightly injured and a man was arrested in Enid Monday after a fight near an ice cream truck ended in gunfire.

Markus Jerome Miller, 29, was arrested for allegedly firing two shots at a woman during an argument that happened in the 1100 block of North 11th Street.

The victim's name has not been released.

Police said Miller, who works for Summer Song Ice Cream, became involved in a verbal altercation with the woman when she approached the truck to buy ice cream. When the woman's friend came to intervene, police said, Miller allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired it into the ground.

Shrapnel from the bullets caused slight injuries to the woman's shoulder and collarbone areas. She declined medical treatment, according to a police report.

Authorities told Eyewitness News 5's Marianne Silber that Miller, a recent University of Oklahoma graduate, is a contract worker employed by the ice cream company and was not supposed to be in Enid. Officers said his only route is in Del City.

Miller was booked at the Enid Police Department and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He was later transferred to the Garfield County Jail, where he awaits a preliminary hearing on the charge.

Enid, OK.

I made the scariest landing of my flying career at that airport.

70 knot winds, about 10 degrees off the runway heading. I crossed the runway at an angle, with almost no ground speed, just before they shut down the airport. They had me wait on the runway until they could send a truckload of guys to walk my plane to the tie downs.

I could have really used an ice cream after that!

Hehe, I can just see an ice cream man applying for a CCW:

Question: "Are you a law abiding citizen?"
Man: "Yes"
Question: "But do you sell ice cream?"
Man: "Yes"

DENIED!! :neener:

Here in AZ, an ice cream guy was charged with raping and impregnating a 9yr old. I distrust anyone who chooses a job driving a van around handing kids goodies out the window. I think they're all pedophiles.

That last was sarcasm, but you do have to wonder who'd make that career choice.

I drove an ice cream truck when I was a teenager. 30+ years ago that was good, honest work. Not all customers appreciated the service. Being what amounted to a small store on wheels you endured the life of the small stores. I went thru robbery attempts, vandalisms, cursed for no reason other than not having exactly what someone wants, and various threats. Having been on the other side of the window so to speak I can see that details are left out in that report.
Exactly what was said and who esculated the potential sale into an arguement? How did the friend intervene?

Imaginative reporter

Funny how the confirmed report of the man firing shots deliberately into the ground morphs into taking a "pot shot AT" the woman (teenager), to make it a better story.
