I know it's intended purpose is to castrate livestock, but what common cutting task would dictate the use of a Spey blade? I have always wondered this.

A spey blade is nothing more than a clip with the point cut off. You can use it for anything that's not trying to kick you at the moment.

You talking about the spey blade on the fine trapper you just ordered?

On my trapper I don't use the spey blade very much. I use the clip all the time and keep the spey finely sharp, just in case I need a very keen edge for something.

How are you liking the knife?

+1

I keep mine razor sharp.
The other general purpose blade less sharp with more edge angle to prevent chipping the edge.

I leave part of it very dull in fact, for skinning the insulation off electrical wire, etc.

When I used to carry a stockman, I used the spay blade to gut trout with. Worked great, that blunt tip was good for not puncturing the internals. Razor sharp and opened them up like a zipper.

use the Spey blade for almost nothing on my Stockmen. I find myself using the drop point most for utility use, and the clip for opening letters and cutting meat, yes I use it to eat with whilst camping or hunting.
