I live in S.E. Michigan and am traveling upnorth for a long weekend in two weeks. I'm mostly thimking about what guns, how many, how much ammo, how many magazines to take with me. For those of you who travel within the state you live, what do you do when you decide this?

Yes, Michigan allows CCW. I don't have one, but will in the future. My handgun is going, but I'm debating rifles, shotguns. Which two should I take is the big question.

Guns on trips.

If I'm leaving the state, I usually take my "CCW" range bag with two glocks, mags, holsters, lights, etc.

Also take my M4gery and 12 mags in case the zombies come out.

I'm in Michigan also, and I never travel to the U.P. without my 10mm and 2 full mags. Generally no extra ammo unless I'm planning on a plinking spree at some of the washouts of the Hiawatha National Forest. Used to do that years ago; haven't in quite a while, but I'd also take a boatload of guns if I did. The 10 is protection from forest creatures and especially dogs, in case I get stranded. The HNF is truly God's country, and it's at least 6 miles in any direction to civilization. People, anyway, no real guarantee that they'll be civilized.:uhoh: Nowadays, I also take my CCW. I spose I'd carry both if I was stranded. Hey, who wouldn't?

My permit is good in every border state except SC and a whole lot of others that aren't. I carry as I do around town here. I don't alter unless shooting is in the forecast for the trip.

Unless I'm planning on shooting... 1 loaded handgun, 2 reloads. Usually never more than 50 rds.

Normal packin' pistol.

Normally, I just carry a 1911 with 2 reloads. If I'm going on an extended road trip, I'll toss a shottie and a box of shells in the trunk. If no nights on the road, just the pistol.

Since I haven't yet perfected my ability to schedule emergencies, I carry the usual concealed (with permit, sidearm and one spare magazine) and the shotgun that normally does house gun duty in the bedroom (12 ga 870, 18" RS IC barrel, 3 rounds 00 buck in the magazine, 4 slugs in the Sidesaddle and a small nylon camera bag with an additional 10 rounds of buck and 20 rounds of slugs). Been thinking about changing the long gun to a rifle or carbine lately, likely a shortened Marlin 336 in .30-30 since there's a spare lurking in the safe.

Not hunting so only carry a .45 and .380, plus one mag each. If going to NY or IL, carry all I can stuff in the secret compartment including one case 00 buck for pistol grip sawed off, full can ammo for each of my assault rifles, and case of .357 and 9 mm for each of the seven sidearms. Naw, just joking about taking weapons to IL or NY....just plenty of money to buy 'em off...but I refuse to go to NY or IL, so have all that extra cash now for guns :D . [Getting cabin fever here with it being so hot and humid.] Only first and last sentences are true. Have a question though...is it OK to have fun here once in a while if I admit its fun?

I'm going to Alpena on August 8th. I plan to take my S&W 59 with 250rds plus 3 full mags of 9mm, my MAK-90 with 1000 rds and 4-30rd, 3-20rd, and 1-5rd mags all full. I'm debating between which other gun. 12 Gauge in Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Or another rifle like a Ruger 10/22, Ishapore Enfield (Navy Arms Jungle Carbine) .308, or my Hi-Point 996 in 9mm. Those are the choices.

When I'm out of town, I HAVE to be within reach of a good long gun, been thinking about pairing the MAK-90 with the M59/66 sks

Edit: I've been known to take a shotgun with me now and again, but it's usually a bear country related thing or traveling to a state that frowns upon handguns. A dozen slugs and a dozen buckshot.

When I go to my place in the UP.....

I can only take 50 rounds for each pistol. That is all the airline will let me take............If I left any ammo at my brother in law's house, he would shoot it all up.....chris3

I don't get your question.

Are you talking about self defense or recreational?

SD, just the carry and 200rnds additional ammo and an AK with 5 loaded mags.

My traveling arms kit is:

My normal sidearm and mags (for states where my permit is good), and my trunk gun. The trunk gun is selected according to whether the destination state throws a hissy over "AWBs" or not. Normally it's an AR. At minimum, it's a folding stock pump 12 ga.

For states that don't honor any permit I have, but are OK with handguns in general, I usually upgun to my hicap .45 in a trunked lockbox alongside whatever the trunk gun du jour is.

It gets hairy, as I travel up and down the Eastern seaboard, where there's a new set of gunlaws every 100 miles.

By car, typically as follows where legal:

S&W 642. Loaded, with three speed strips on me and 50 rds of carry ammo in ammo can.

Glock 20, loaded w/spare 15 rd loaded mag. Along goes a w/.40 KKM conversion bbl and Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit. Usually also 50 rds of 40, 100 rds of full power 10mm and couple hundred rds of .22, plus 2 spare mags, all in the ammo can.

Long gun varies, but usually a 16" Bushy AR or a 16" .44 mag Marlin 1894P. About 100 spare rounds of .44 + 30 rds on a bandolier, or 250 rds of .223 in some combo of loaded mags and stripper clips.
