Last year it was primers, impossible to find. Then earlier this year was rifle powder. Now pistol powder. It's a cycle.

Now your getting close. That is exactly what it is. It would be properly called a manufacturing cycle. Also a manufacturing schedule. Powder, ammo, and bullet manufacturers do not have the capacity to run all of their products all of the time. SO they have a manufacturing schedule.
I would guess that late winter, thru most of spring is the time of year when rifle powder is produced. That way it can be on the shelf in the fall when we turn our interests towards hunting. After that they turn production over to pistol powder. If you remember last fall you could find pistol powder but NO rifle powder.

Manufacturing schedules are not at all very flexible. Equipment needs to be changed to run the new line, raw materials need to be ordered ahead of time so they are at the plant when needed.

So the schedules coupled with the added sales thanks to the ever present panic climate, have us over a barrel. Manufacturers are enjoying booming sales but are still reluctant to invest capitol to increase factory capacity. They have seen this before and probably intend to ride it out. Even if they did decide to expand facilities I would guess to say you would be looking at a minimum of a year or two before the new facilities would be up and running.

My suggestion, grin and bear it. Buy what you are going to need for rifle powder NOW while it is on the shelf. I do believe in a few months those who didn;t will be creating a thread asking where all the rifle powder is!!!

Please be kind to your fellow reloaders too. Buy what you are going to need, not what you believe will get you thru an apocalypse, that kind of buying is contributing to why we are where we are right now.

I go to Ed's guns in southern pines NC . Always has something on the shelf . Last time I bought Blue Dot and Herco & 2000 primers. Gun shows usually have a good selection . Several make the rounds in central NC . Haz mat fees have kept me from buying on line.

Is there anyone here from around Menominee, Michigan? I have a friend that's from up that way that is brand new to reloading and he's looking for someplace local that has pistol powder in stock. He's trying to load 40 S&W right now and will be doing .45acp and 9mm later down the road.

I need to swing by Bobs and see what they got. I was at C2 the other day and they had some green dot in stock.

Cabelas has CFE Pistol in stock. Well, at least they did about 4 hours ago. But, at $41 per lb (haz mat + shipping + price) I decided to wait for it to come in locally.

I picked up a couple pounds of Unique at Bass Pro in Savannah, GA a couple days ago. First pistol powder I've found there in well over a year.

If one is open to trying new components, everything can be found locally here except for pistol powder.

What I have decided to do to avoid ever being caught with my drawers around my ankles again, is to stock up on what is available. More like re-stocking. I said stocking up and not hoarding :). The mfg cycle explanation described above makes a lot of sense. So, when they start shipping pistol powder again, I'll be all set. In the meantime, I'll get by with my "dog from every town" supply of half full canisters of pistol powders and keep a watchful eye out for the pistol powders to start showing up.

[edit] oops, I see this is what Edster was recommending I do anyway :).

I just picked up an 8lb jug of CFE pistol at my LGS for $124.99. :) They also had AutoComp for less than $20/lb. This is in the Harrisburg area. If you need a location PM me

I picked one up. Well my wife ordered it for me for Father's Day. . Got it Tuesday. Love it. First progressive ever. Been loading on single stage for 2.5 years now.

Widener's has TAC and Accurate 2495, both excellent for gas guns. Graf's actually has IMR4895 which is good for gassers as well.

Just saw that...Had been trying to talk my wife into letting me get a couple LBs. Guess now I can say "You're right honey, I really dont need any powder right now".

I was shocked this morning when i scrolled down and actually saw the little "buy" icon beside the Power Pistol 1 LB...I danced a little jig, even though I'm not really in the market. Hope some of my fellow THRians got some.

And that is why I have my own play account that I put my allowance in to. I don't ask, I just buy if I have the money in there
#1 secret to a happy marriage I've found so far. each of us has a "fun money" account for our little hobbies. Separate from the account that pays the usual bills. what we do with that is our own, and our own consequences if a good deal comes up and it's empty...

she never gripes about a gun or tools or fishing gear - and I never say a word about shoes or purses or accessories. (other than to compliment how they make her look - but that's secret #2 to a happy marriage)

OH no no no no. First rule of negotiation always get something for anything! "OK honey, I wont buy it, rare as it is, but in return......or, but next time let me.....since I restrained myself, how about....and so forth! LOL

I am in the market, darn it. Have plenty of others, but never tried PP.
