Looking for some suggestions on where to send an HK USP for detailed cleaning and possibly some custom trigger work? Other than sending the USP to HK in Sterling VA, what HK smiths/armorers exist out there with a good reputation?

I suppose you could take it to a local smith for an ultrasonic cleaning, but I think it's a total waste of money. The USP is a 'hard use' gun made of polymer and slide coated with their "hostile element" treatment -similiar to Glocks, dishwasher-safe. Hand cleaning with modern cleaners and a toothbrush is all you will ever need to do with it.

For specific questions about USP ownership, modifications and gunsmithing, try visiting this dedicated USP owner's site.

How many rounds do you have through it? I've got 22k+ through my USP 45 & it hasn't been detail cleaned. A simple, yet thorough, cleaning after every use is all it gets!
Sorry, I've never had trigger work done to my USPs (except for a match trigger installed on my IDPA gun).

Detail cleaning a USP is pretty easy and there are lots of instructions on the web that do a good job describing how to do it. Take your time tearing it apart and pay close attention to where and how the parts go together and you'll be fine. My only warning is to not disassemble the trigger pivot and spring: its not very easy to get back together (although once you figure it out, it's a breeze next time).

I'm amazed how much gunk gets stuffed behind the extractor and yet it keeps working perfectly: German engineering at its best.

If I knew anything about the plastic HK uses, I'd say Walmart: brake parts cleaner, less than a dollar a can.
