I know that I have not priced out and sks in almost 10 years but are they really running in the $300 range? Wow, you can pick up an ak for $350....

Depends on where you get them, but yeah, they're getting up there.

I think a good condition Russian SKS starts at $300 and goes from there. Others, less so.

Unlike the AK, the SKS is no longer in production and most of the state arsenals have been emptied of them, which means that market supply is continuously diminishing. There's a strong demand for the rifle, because it has a lot of desirable features - semi-automatic, 7.62x39 cartridge, solid reliability, quality construction, good looks, just to name a few. Therefore, the price has increased...it was inevitable, quite frankly. I imagine there will come a day where even the seemingly ubiquitous Mosin-Nagants will start climbing in price.

Alot of people are realizing now that these guns are not "crappy guns".I rememeber 15 years ago everyone thought they were junk becuase of the low price tag, the interent has dispelled this myth..

A gun like this made in america with solid milled reciever and semi auto would run easily $500-$600..
Go get you a yugo (though no chrome lined barrel they are good guns)they are fairly cheap still once the surplus from yugo is exausted, the price will jump higher..

They are beautful guns.. One reason I like the SKS becuase they look like a hybrid between a hunting rifle and a AK..
The chinese do an excellent job bluing the guns also the same quality of the american gun makers.

Also shooting prone they are good becuase they dont have a large mag hanging down.

Alot of Wild boar/ Pig hunters in my area use them becuase they like the bayonet becuase when apporaching game they can "stick" the pig if it attacks. With a cheap powerful caliber like 7.62x39 one can not go wrong..

most of the cheap sks were chinese and they were banned from being imported I believe in 1994 which drove prices up alot over the years had they not of been banned im sure they would still be inexpensive today.

No, most SKSs, IIRC, got around the ban by having a 10 round fixed mag, no pistol grip, etc...

The $150 SKS? I still miss my first, a $100 gun show special, and another $100 for 1000 rounds of 7.62x39!

Wow, I feel lucky to have gotten a $350 AK (even the WASR-10s look to be north of $400 nowadays). Wish I'd gotten into collecting a few years ago during these "golden days".

For what it's worth though, not everything was cheaper in the past, especially ammo. I don't recall the particular "why is ammo so expensive" thread it was, but ammo was actually more expensive in the 90s I think than it is now. The current hikes in price are bringing it up from the relatively low ammo prices of the early 2000s. In '90 I remember buying 9mm FMJ practice ammo for about $9 per 50, so I was puzzled a few years ago when I got back into shooting and found it costing about $7 per 50. Now it's back up to about $9 or even $10 per 50.

Now what I really wish I'd gotten into was reloading a few years ago when jacketed bullets were only about 4 cents apiece, and powder and primers were a lot less. In the last year and a half alone I've seen primers shoot up almost 50% to $30 per 1000.

We bought them all.

Um, sorry, some of us older curmudgeons bought a bunch of them when they were cheap. Supply and demand caught up. I have a pair of ChiCom Type 56 and a Yugo, so I'll refrain from buying more and contributing to the shortage.;)

most firearms and ammunition was banned from import from china whether it was classified as an assualt rifle or not, and that only left military surplus sks from other countrys that could still be imported, I didnt say that all sks was banned just the chinese sks.

Get 'em when they are here. I remember buying them for $77 at gunshows in the late '90's. Thought they would be around that price forever. I was wrong. From that point on I buy when I see a good price. Mosin nagants will soon be selling for $200 +, just like the sks and the $150 ak. Everything goes up. Everything but a working mans dollar.:(

We have long passed the time of cheap SKSs. I would not sell mine for cheap as well . Norcs are selling at $ 300 at gunbroker.com

They went the same place $1.25 gas went. Up up and away.

The surplus in Europe is drying up/has dried up, so there are very few being imported now. Supply and demand.

Hey, I know where an Albanian SKS is. Only $550!

I believe they will continue to go up in price, maybe more than the AKs.

They are a viable alternative in states where "assault rifles" are banned. No pistol grip, hi-cap mags, etc.

King Ghidora, I'd grab that $165 D-model if I were you. That price can't go anywhere but up.

Around here, regular Norinco SKS's are well over $200, Russians are way over $300, and even the Romanians were close to $200 a year ago.
