I went into a pawn shop the other day wanting to sell my revolver. The pawn ship guy treated my a criminal!! I have a Ruger.357 Security Six with a Pachmayr grip.He gave it a good look over, then looked at me like i was crazy and told me that the serial number had been filed off. My question is...Where should he have been looking for the serial number? He was looking inside of the the gun by the cylinder. He said that the gun was probably stolen or used in some kind of crime!! I just gave him a crazy look and left. He treated me horribly!!! Maybe because i am a woman?? Can someone help me with this...i would really like to tell him off and let him know that he needs to do his research on guns before he says things like that!!:fire::

Wow!! thanks for your help. This guy thought he was hand gun wizard. A Mr. Know it all. I do believe i will call him Monday morning and let him know he has no idea what he is talking about!!! Thanks again

At any gun shop you'll likely get around 50% of the value (that's been my experience), and I would bet that a pawn shop would give you even less. I would highly recommend you take a few pictures and post the gun in the classifieds here. You're more likely to get the actual value of the gun and won't have to deal with people treating you like a criminal.

Be sure and tell him all S&W's also had the serial number on the butt for about 100 years.

No not all. Some that had stocks that wrapped around the bottom of the butt; such as the Regulation Police and some top breaks and .22 rimfire target models had the number stamped on the frontstrap. But these are relatively uncommon.

I'd also like to join the "stay-out-of-pawnshops" crowd. Put it up here, or on Armslist.com (the "craigslist" of firearms classifieds.) Good luck!
My Service Six revolver has the number there, also, but a groove in the Pachmayr grip exposes it so it can be seen.
