I buy older guns for the most part, collectible guns, so I buy them wherever I can find them. Many are from online sources, some FTF that I usually locate on forums such as this one, some from gun shows. I've had good luck with all venues because I know what I'm looking for and I do my due diligence before pulling the trigger, to coin a phrase.

I have read where some people say they have had bad experiences with oinline sellers. Know your seller, check his reputation, get enough images (clear sharp ones) so you are satisfied that is what you're paying for, and be sure exactly what condition the gun is in before closing a deal.

Other.

By preference we go to one particular local gun shop. We have also bought in private sales from friends/acquaintances.

If the situation were appropriate we'd buy from any of the other venues except for from a different, specific, local gun shop which we avoid for reasons I won't go into.

I was unable to respond to this poll because you didn't provide a very popular option: purchase guns online and have them shipped to an FFL (which is different from having the FFL do it for you).

This is the way I buy all new and many used guns these days. I buy from local gun shops only if they can beat the price, shipping and transfer fee. And even then I'm suspicious as to "what's wrong with it?!" :)

I just bought 2 handguns this week and a shotgun a month ago. One was FTF and the other two were from online dealers.
My LGS's are either over priced or have limited selection.
I'm always looking for something specific and usually used. I saved over $300 on the Beretta shotgun and found a killer deal on a Colt GC trophy{FTF} and I found a nice S&W 4006 which was customized.
I do buy reloading supplies local, but pickins are slim for shooting access. around here. The shops just keep closing up. :(
