tumble your brass? I have heard some guys say only do it outside, others do it in the basement. So where do you do it at?

Currently I do mine in my sun room.

digbmx4130, welcome to THR.

I only do it in the garage with window/door open for ventilation or just outside the garage in the open. I often tumble with the lid off and don't have issue with dust as wind drifts it away.

I prefer not to tumble indoors.

I have the Lyman tumbler with the orange slotted cover.
So I tumble in the garage.

It's attached, so I don't have to go out in the snow, but there's no cross ventilation between the house & garage.

Basement with the rest of my hobby stuff.

Dust or smell is not an issue but static electricity always spreads a little of the media around when dumping.

Basement keeps the noise from the rest of the house.

At my feet at the loading bench. Why do some of you guys tumble outside? Don't your tumblers have tops? Even if they don't, are they messy? I have on occassion used walnut and it seemed to put off some dust, but I primarily use corncob and Brasso. As long as I don't let the media get too "loaded", there's no dust.

that's a personal question! i do it in the bedroom ... where i do all my handloading.

I also tumble in the basement. Like said above, as long as your tumbler has a cover there's no problem with dust. BUT, you should be careful when you dump the brass and media into the separator. That's when you can get a face full of dangerous dust.

I tumble in the garage but am thinking that the back patio would be a good idea too. I have a cover on my tumbler but the dust still "leaks" out.

In the basement, not because of dust, but because that's where my reloading bench is. A little dust doesn't bother me. A shop vac takes care of it.

In the man cave. The tumbler sits at the left corner of the bench. It's generally off when I'm in there, as I can't stand the noise for long. I'll put a batch on and walk over to the house for a few hours.

regarding the Lyman tumbler slotted cover...for my Turbo 1200 I used the handyman's secret weapon - duct tape - and simply covered the slots. Works great, costs little.

I have the Cabelas model 400 tumbler. Right now I tumble mine in my sun room/ patio. I hate not having it with my reloading stuff, which is my my man cave part of the basement.

I guess now I will do it in the basement. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't dangerous.

I tumble in the garage, where I do my loading also. I have a lid, but I also tear a used fabiric softener sheet in two and put both pieces in it while it goes. Cuts way down on the dust, and it is one more way to "reuse" before you discard. I also have my tumbler on a lamp timer, so that it turns off after a time. Like Ron Popeil says, "set is and forget it!"

My reloading area is in a utility shed out behind the house. The tumbler is setup on one of the tables I have there. Heck once I turned it on to tumble some cases and it slipped my mind that it was even on. Was 3 days later when I came back. Lets just say those were the brightest cases I'd ever seen - almost had a frosted look to the brass, which I though looked great, except that when I FL sized them the finish went glossy again :). I need to try that lamp timer idea . . .

Typically I keep my powder, press, etc all out there. Only thing I keep in the house are my dies, which I bring inside for rust concerns. I just take out the set for whatever I'm loading and then bring them back in the house when I'm done.

I do mine outside with the lids off. Those older big Dillons would wake the dead!! I also use dryer sheets in the walnut to suck up some of the dirt/dust. I will run my Thumblers Tumblers in the garage for my DANZAC coating as they are very quiet.

I do mine in the bsmnt, I have 2 tumblers, one w/walnut and one w/corn cob, when both are going, I'll leave for about 2 hours. Both are Lyman tumblers with good lids, no mess.
