I find myself in need of some real black powder. I have been using Triple Se7en for about 5 years now. But I want some real black. I thought I could cruise in some of my usual gettin' places and pick up a bottle- But NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Nobody seems to carry it- they all say it is too dangerous. So where can I get some locally? I am between San Antonio and Austin (don't say Cabelas, they don't sell it, neither does Academy (though they sell black powder guns- go figure). Where do you guys buy it? Or am I going to have to order it via mail?

You best be picking up a "tin" of black powder. It may be harder (& HARDER) to ship and store because of it's explosive designation. That, combined with the low demand (Pyrodex, Triple Se7en, etc.) makes big box retailers unlikely spots. I'm lucky, Dixie Gun Works is 55 minutes away, I can drive & pick it up. Check their website, they MIGHT know how to get some to you. You could grind & mix it yourself from (three) raw materials, but there may be a law or two in your way. Good Luck!

Well, My mon gave me a can ( It was my dad's ) from the 60s. I found a can of it at a gun show. Here they say ( the places that sell muzzleloader stuff) that the regulations requires them to keep black powder in a bunker out back. I called gun dealers, both big and small, and found the same as you. ( I' m in Minnesota). I think the best suggestion is to check the gun shows. Also if you want, check the other threads, some talk about making your oun.

Mc Brides Guns in Austin has Goex black powder. You have to go upstairs and ask for it. I just bought 3 cans of fffg. Real black is the way to go, anyone that says any different has no experience with it.

Bass Pro Shops

Most Bass Pro Shops stock Goex black powder. But you may need to ask the gun dept. management to get it from the storage magazine.
There's a Bass Pro Shop in San Antonio and it's advisable to call first to see if they have any in stock.
Bass Pro has some other locations in Texas too.

Why would you ask that on a black powder forum?
I shoot Muzzle Loaders/Black Powder rifles & pistols like they are going out of business & I have never found a need for (Black Powder) Pyrodex is so much safer....

Have you ever used real black powder?
Would you like to explain why you think the substitute powders are safer?
The difference between real black powder and the miserable substitutes is like night and day.
It's irritating beyond belief the hoops we have to jump through anymore to feed a muzzle stuffer! :cuss:

There's just something about the flash/boom of gen-uuu-wine smokepole fuel that simple can't be synthesized or duplicated. I LOVE the smell of rotting eggs in the morning. It smells like Home in the Hills up a Holler.

Besides all that, genuine BP is just so much easier to load and use and has such more consistent results than the substitutes.
Then try and fire a flint lock with one of the chunky poorly made synthetics. :barf:

I have some trouble shooting black powder in my Lyman cap lock GPR. Lyman told me to drop a couple of grains of black powder first before loading pyrodex. So then I beg the question why use pyrodex if I'm going to add black powder as an accelerant anyway?

In Texas you've got some options on aquiring the correct powder for your toys without having to mail order the stuff. The above suggestions are good but I'll add one more. I've found Black Powder at Gander Mountain in College Station so I'm assuming that they all carry the stuff.

Different strokes as they say, it's just more for us!!:neener:

To each his own, I just thought I would ask, I have always used Pyrodex & never had a problem with it, if you use the right powder in the right firearm....

Foto Joe, They are just Black Powder wanna-b's They like to shoot modern powder in muzzleloaders They like to talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk. Just wanna-b's play acting. As long as they don't hurt anybody their
harmless.

I bought 4lbs of Swiss 1 yesterday... I have a dealer at 12 minutes from home...

Though there is no way for me to buy 777...

Welcome to my world. The yankees don't seem to believe you can't find BP in Texas. :D

You can order it, but the hazmat fee is stupid. I just stick with the subs. I don't have a flinter and this is part of the reason.

Goex, all granulations but FFFFg in stock.
5 lb. lot: $21.81 per lb.
10 lb. lot: $17.29 per lb.
25 or 50 lb. lot: $13.96 per lb..
Price includes shipping and hazmat fee.

The link says "suspected virus" or something, for me. I ain't goin' there, all I'm sayin'. :D Just got rid of a nasty malware bug.

Only advantage I find in Black (used to shoot it before Pyrodex was invented) is that it ignites so much easier. Otherwise, I kinda prefer 777, myself. Black has snob appeal, though. It's cool to proclaim you won't shoot anything else. Puts you on the smug list with groups like Prius owners, Macy's shoppers, and such. :D

Oh, edit, I left out Starbucks coffee drinkers. :D

About a year and one half ago I posted in my local NW gun forums about a group buy of black powder. I only got 2 responses which was not enough. It is a shame because you could buy 10 lbs of powder in a group buy for not much more than buying 5 lbs by yourself. I guess I will go on shooting Triple 7.

Why all the dogmatism about real black powder versus substitutes? Some people have a hard time finding it locally and don't want to spend a lot buying bulk in order to try it. Some people just prefer the easier clean up some substitutes offer. And some, gasp, might be getting better results with it.

As gun owners and muzzleloader enthusiasts, we ought to be encouraging people to enjoy this pastime and these guns in whatever manner they choose, not riding them about the propellant they use.

That's my two cents.

I only had a film canister of 3f bp. Nobody around here carries bp so I go some pyrodex. Did not fire in the flinter. Tried duplexing with 10 gr. 3f bp. worked good. Now that I have the 2f bp that I found at a gunshow, the flinter will get straight bp. (as it should be). I can use the pyrodex in the Lyman caplock. Those of you that have access to bp can feel lucky. Some of us don't have easy access, and $10 a canister hasmat fees make mail order too expensive, for some of us. I check the stores when ever I'm outa town, if possible. I have not found any body that carries it. The local sporting goods store said they would order it to come with thier normal shippment. No dice, didn't happen. Anyway, I'm good for now. I'll keep my eyes open, and buy what I can when I can.
