Im in the market for a mosin nagant (m91/30). I was looking at aim surplus and i really like that i can have them pick a better rifle. But like most my local shop charges 20$ fee to have it shipped and then id end up paying the ground shipping and the and pick fee! like they always do the guy said, "well, youll end up paying a lot more if you dont order it from us." maybe, im not sure 100% how it would go down, but i wouldn't get to have the hand pick and id end up paying tax too. i could also go to the sporting goods store and pick my own for 90$. the issue i have with that is that they are all round receivers. i suppose if i could pick between the 10 or so they have there that would possibly be better than the hand picked 5 hex receivers. im really torn on what to do here.

If it's just going to be a shooter, round vs. hex receiver really doesn't matter. If you're collecting the things or trying to bugger around with them (and why would you do that?) the hex receivers can be more appealing, but they all shoot pretty much the same. If you want a better shooter, save your pennies and find a Finnish Mosin for sale somewhere.

It really just comes down to whatever's cheaper: ordering from AIM or buying directly from your local store. Unless your local store's guns look heinous, there isn't likely to be a huge difference in quality/finish. Mosins are Mosins are Mosins, by and large.

yea. im more or less looking at something thats cool to have and goes boom. possible coyote gun if i ever get around to that, but i do have other options for that too. i originally really like the round receiver just because they looked sleeker to me but the hex has grown on me a little. i think ill go to the store and check them out before i buy from anywhere, i just know its going to be awkward when i want to look through like 15 rifles part by part. im not expecting great accuracy but i do want a semi good shooter. another point i have to worry about, do the rifles from the store usually come with the accessories kit? i really want the sling and bayonet to help improve accuracy and coolness!

and wow! i just realized i only have 15 posts on this forum! i guess i look a lot more than i talk.

First and foremost, make sure the barrel's good, obviously. Make sure that the bolt doesn't require a cheater bar to pry open, that the front sight isn't drifted halfway out of the dovetail and that the magazine floorplate doesn't rattle (just an annoyance thing - doesn't have any real practical drawbacks in use). That should be about it - it's not as if Mosins are overly complex.

yea true.

turns out theres a flyer that shows them in it. they do come with the bayonet and cleaning kit.

Can you visit a gun show soon?

Today, the Memphis show had tons of MNs, mostly 91/30s (no Finns),and a buddy had two really nice 44s: both a Polish and a Hungarian.

If you have a big 5 sporting goods where you are, They are on sale for 90 dollars till sunday and come with bayonet, Sling, Ammo pouches, and cleaning kit with multi tool. oh yeah and the oil/cleaner bottle.
