Ive been frequenting the local pawn shops lately looking for some tools of mine that were stolen, when I saw something I never expected to see in my life. A highly engraved hex receiver mosin nagant. Im really really tempted to go back tomorrow and take it home. I have a 1942 mosin already, but Im not real familiar with all the different makes and models. Can anyone tell me anything about this one, and is it worth $350? Could probably get it for $300. Sorry I should’ve taken better pictures.

Someone must have really loved their Mosin.
I would think that if some put that amount of effort into a gun like that it’s one of two things.
  1. That rifle is such a good shooter that they wanted to dress it up a bit.
  2. It was a gunsmithing school project.
Either way it is really unique and I would buy it just to find out.

Somebody took sporterizing to a whole new level. The checkering, however, is not nearly as well done as the engraving.

I can fix checkering. Its layed out well, but needs to be much deeper. May have been the victim of over-sanding. gonna go look at it again tomorrow.

If the bore is really good, I'd probably throw an offer of 300 at it, just for the cool/unique factor. As above, I'm guessing it was a gunsmith school project, or maybe just a bored gunsmith.

yeah I don't really care for mosins, but I'd buy that. The one I sporterized was smooth, accurate, and fun to shoot.....just took a few hours of polishing and tuning.
That ones nice enough it would probably be worth the effort.

But It!
I have had 8 or 9 mosins and currently have two. One is decent looking that i stripped the Cosmo off a few months ago. Drops moa groups at 100 with crappy surplus ammo. Can't wait to tailor a load to this one!
The other is a beat to hell Chinese m53 that I call my 'fire breathing dragon'. It shoots ok-ish, 4 inch groups at 100.

I'd have to see it over-all and the breech-to-crown but based upon the pictures you are showing - if I only saw those and it was close - I'd go down to look at it. Between the price and what you've already shown, I'd be seriously intrigued.

But then, I have a soft-spot for over-loved milsurp guns.

Todd.

Ok I got it, cost me $265. Pretty sweet deal. Only real identifying marks are small stars. One punched on the bottom of the bolt, and trigger guard. Also a triangle on top of the bolt. Decent Iron sights, decent bore, and came with a leather double ammo pouch and 60 rounds. No rust anywhere, but the stock has some cracks Ill have to glue. Heres some more eye candy! Also the pawn guy said the engraving and stock were done in japan.

Amazing find! I think someone put $1000 in to that rifle. I estimate $350 for the stock, $300 for bolt turn down, sight installation and bluing. I have no idea what engraving costs, but it has to be hundreds.

You got a deal!!!

I cant in good faith shoot it until i put a bunch of work into the stock, and I really dont have time now. I might get a plastic stock in the meantime. Theres a crack in the tang, and wood just forward of the trigger is split clean through. Might do a cross bolt and plug with a piece of ebony, Ive always liked the way that looks. Hows aftermarket stock compatibility between hex and round receivers?
