Where to buy new COLT uppers?

I don't have their phone number, but Hoplite advertises in Shotgun News that they have new Colt uppers. If memory serves me correct, the price was $799 for a complete 6920 upper with bolt carrier and charging handle.

I haven't seen any 20" Colt uppers for sale, with the exception of the M16A1 barreled uppers that were for sale the last couple years. I bought one from CDNN and it was a great buy. I bet you could still find one with some looking.

I've always been a bit confused on how these uppers fit to the standard AR-15 lower receivers.

My current flat top has a push-pin in the rear position, and a screw fitting that allows the front pin to rotate only.

Is there some type of adapter kit I have to purchase?

I could have a flat-top for varmints and a more standard upper for plinking.

Tourist, Colt uppers fit either either large pivot pin or small pivot pin lowers.

The large pin is Colt only and is a double-headed screw.

The small pin is milspec and some Colt small pin lowers will have a double headed screw and others have a milspec pin with a detent. The small pin upper will install on a milspec style lower like Bushy, RRA, DPMS, etc.

If your lower has the screw, it can be large pin or small pin (~.250"). Measure the pivot pin diameter and if it's about 1/4", it will accept a milspec upper with no adapters. If it's a large pin (~.315), you'll need an offset adapter pin.

Beware that not all bolt carriers will function with your lower if it has the sear block and you may need to replace the spare upper's regular BCG with a Colt "half-moon" BCG to clear the sear block. Not too big a deal, just buy the Colt carrier, put your bolt in it and run it, and sell you new upper's original carrier.

One other thing that can make the "pin issue" confusing is that sometimes people use the term "small pin"/"large pin" and are actually referring to the fire control pins. Some Colts (of either pivot pin size) use slightly larger hammer & trigger pins which prevents M-16 FCG parts from being installed, as well as many nice aftermarket upgrade triggers.

EShell, this is good to know. My receiver is a Colt. It always seemed to me that it should accept Colt uppers with no hassle. I did expect to have to change out the actual screw or pin.

I do hope that I can have the best of both worlds, that is, I can convert both uppers to utilize push pins for immediate conversion. That way if a buddy stops by to plink, I can quickly dismantle the flat-top version in seconds.
