I am looking to buy a winchester model 70 coyote action in either .223 or .243So I can essentially build my own rifle I know I would have to get the barrel and stock and scope but is that it. If so where can I find one of there actions for sale. Would all this be cheaper than just buying a new rifle or not. Either way if I buy a new gun I'm putting on a new stock.

Your name is Savage shooter but your wanting a Winchester. Tired of shooting tight groups?

Anyway just buy you the cheapest winchester you can find and go from there. If you have to have the coyote it will be easier to just buy the whole rifle restock it and sell the old stock on gun broker or auction arms.

Be careful with the Coyotes. Some were great, some were good, and others were just plain awful. Mine was in the first group and dimensionally perfect. I have a buddy though, whose Coyote had an out-of-round chamber and dysfunctional bolt. Inspect before you buy.

Sheesh. I'm admittedly a M70 fanboy...but in my stable, the only non-sub MOA gun I have is a 375H&H.

Anything can be made to shoot. But not everything can be made to be elegant...

Why a Winchester?

Savage is easiest to change barrels on - if you have a savage with a .308-size boltface, a .243 barrel will screw right in.

Remington 700s are easiest to have worked on. And Jerry Stiller's accurized and true clone of the 700 action is a very nice piece.

Maybe Savage Shooter is looking specifically for something with controlled-round feed (CRPF in this case), locking bolt, or a decent three-position safety.

I do believe his original question was, where can he find an M70 Coyote action...

Seafarer12 I also just happen to be a huge winchester fan and a huge savage fan my savage 12fv .223 can hit a 50 cent piece all day at 200 yards with sucky wolf. :neener:

Richard.Howe yes thank you that was my question. and those are some of the reasons.

dakotasin just though it looked like a good one but am open to suggestions

bogie have just read some good things and I can get more after market parts with savages its mainly all parts for 10fp.

I personaly don't care very much for remingtons the only one I would have is a 700 sps tactical remingtons are overpriced in my opinion now I don't want a bunch of crap about this thats my opinion not yours.

The action used in the coyote is the same action used in the other rifles. Just find one with the bolt face you're looking for. If not, try the FN actions, they are the winchester M70 actions. In fact, FN is not making the model 70 for winchester in S.C. since winchester quit making them. They're back in the winchester cataloge again.

The Coyote action was NOT a controlled round feed. It was the push-feed style that Winchester made back in the 70's and 80's. They DON'T have a claw extractor. Just go find a post-64 style Winchester action (not that many folks want them anyway) and build your rifle from there. I'm not aware of anything being particularly great about this particular action, but if it's what you want, then have at it.

Right, the 700 "we're ultra accurate and ultra tactical" rifles -are- overpriced. Their so-called "custom shop" is now only so-so.

Let's see. What do I have in the safe now... A 110FP .308, a 12BVSS-S .22-250 (factory single shot!), and a 110 6BR in a benchrest stock with a Shilen Select Match barrel on it, with the Rifle Basix trigger.

Along with two grizzlies, a panda, a coupla ARs, a coupla mausers (and one of 'em chambered for a short .22PPC and weighs about 20 pounds), and that's that for that safe...

Doesn't mean you shouldn't check out Jerry Stiller's 700 clone. Why? More -accurate- gunsmiths will work on 700s than any other action. Pick one up, get a McMillan stock, a Jewell Trigger, a Shilen Select Match with a Heavy Varmint taper, and send 'em off to a gunsmith like Billy Stevens, and you'll get back a work of art.

Keep in mind too that you can download a .22-250 to .223, and shoot it a long time, but you can only load a .223 up to .22-250 performance once.

The downside with the 22-250 is the slow twist on most factory rifles. Its fine for light bullets but a downside if you want to shoot anything heavy. Now if you buy a custom barrel its a non issue.

The Coyote action was NOT a controlled round feed.

Hmmm, is that a fact? Emphatic contradictions like that really ought to be well-researched. Here is the bolt face design of the M70 Coyote, a controlled-round push feed (or CRPF):

Yes, it looks like a push feed from the outside, but upon actual inspection of the bolt face, you'll see that it is indeed controlled feed.

I know...I've had two.

You guys are missing the question WHERE DO I BUY ONE :fire::cuss:

and no it doesn't have to be a coyote action just thought it would go better with coyote rifle parts i like the look of the coyote rifle.

skinewmexico whats CDNN:confused:

bogie all that sounds great love to have it but i'm on a budget and that all is quite expensive.

thats going to be a tough one to find just the action! some custom makers sell their actions that are copys of the Mdl 70's but they are big $$$$ . the Win Coyote is a nice looking rifle in the whole. my locale Bass Pro has several of them in the .223WSSM. for $ 795. you might be better of buying the whole rifle. a varmint shot with a push feed bolt knows no difference. now if your hunting, lion leopard, cape buffalo, men, i would certainly go with controlled round feed!

When i clicked here i was confused about what a " coyote " winchester is , I think i understand now , and i believe ill keep my old mod 70 lol . Nothing against newer rifles , heck my truck gun is a savage bolt .

Savage ,
there are 3 actions pictured in the Brownells catalog #58 on pgs 3 & 4 from Dakota which is a Win. mdl 70 pre '64 it's only$1,850 (pick me up one while your at it buddy ole pal!) CZ is a Mauser with pre Mdl 70 Winchester back round. but it looks like thats long action only 30'06 length $485, still plenty for just an action. then the Rugers but they are already barreled. around $665.

if you're going to be in it for the long run you could pick up one of the Yugo 48 Mauser its in the medium length can be modified for the varmint cartridges your interested in. they are cheap Winchester used the best ideas from Mauser rifles to come up with the pre '64 mdl 70 actions there are alot of add ons you can use triggers low swing safties etc. the only draw back being not as many parts available for that intermeidate action the barrels for the Yugo of are the large ring type but modifing the bolt for the smalller varmint cartridge might be a problem, and also the stock selection is not as diverse.

there are about a million books written on modifying Mauser actions, lots of good reading! bunches of web links on the Mauser.

don't count the newest version of the Mdl 70 out either the triggers are better than ever( everybodys chasing Savage here) and they are made right here in the good ole USA

and there are a bunch Remington guys out ther just wanting to bust my chops for not mentioning the sooner!

Dagger Dog
Thats EXPENSIVE holy crap all that for a action.:what:
and I am looking for the new style not the pre '64 ones.
As for mauser I have no experience what soever have,nt even ever seen one.
