A very good friend of mine just brought home some guns that he inherited from his grandfather, including his grandfather's old Winchester Model 88 (a rifle he apparently hunted with for years). This rifle has a lot of sentimental value to my friend, but unfortunately has suffered a broken stock, right in the area where your strong hand would wrap around the stock when firing the gun.

The stock isn't broken completely through, but I probably wouldn't fire the gun in its current condition. My friend is a very pro-2A guy (even has a sign that says as much in his front yard), but he isn't enough of a gun nut to know where to begin to look for such an item. Frankly, I'm not sure either (despite the fact that he left the gun with me in hopes that I might figure it out), but thought you guys here on THR might be a good resource for such information!

I've heard that there are both "early" and "late" models of this gun. In case it helps, the S/N for this particular rifle is in the 85,000's.

In my searches thus far I've only found unfinished stocks for these rifles.

I have a friend that inherited a Sako Finnwolf VL63 with a broken stock. The rifle is similar the Win M88. He had good folks at Wenig make him a semi inletted stock and he fitted it and finished it himself. It came out very nice and instead of a unusable barreled action he can now use it. I have been meaning to get a pic of it.

Wenig specializes in high grade shotgun furniture but they also do rifles.

Here is a link below. The site is a bit rough to navigate.
