Where to get AK-74 clones?

I'm looking at buying my first EBR and I had nearly decided on building an AR-15 when i had to pause and think about ammo pricing...yeah, a bummer for me. Then I remembered the AK-74. My all time favorite EBR,a nd ammo is dirt cheap....like...stupidly cheap, so i have pretty much decided on an AK-74 clone.

My problem is, where can I find such a beast? Aresenal is a bit too much, but I may just save my pennies if there is no alternative. I need quality, and accuraccy. Nothing crazy but 3 MOA would be very nice.

I have 500 bucks now, and I'll have 600 pretty soon, so what's out there?

Depending on where you live, a build party is an option. Buying the kit of your choice, and the compliance parts and receiver to build it on and then building it yourself can be a very rewarding process.

Search for a Polish Tantal clone. You can probably snag one for under $600.

That's a good plan as long as the 5.45 ammo supply holds up...

Atlantic firearms has '74's by Lancaster & Interarms, both are said to be nice.

I would urge you to get an Ohio Rapid Fire AK-74. I got one and never looked back- I love it.

They are made off Bulgarian kits and have nice triggers (tapco). Smooth as silk, light recoil, ammo is cheap, and it is a much more flat-shooting round than the AK-47. If you burp fire them, they zip away like an uzi (much faster than an AK-47).

Ohio Rapid Fire was easy to deal with, they shipped it fast, and they back their work with a warranty. I got the paratrooper folding stock but you can get a fixed stock for cheaper. However, I did notice prices are creeping up.

If you get one, I'd bite the bullet and buy 3,000 rounds ($120 a case of 1080) from Century or Aim. You never know if the 5.45 x 39 will dry up at one point.

Go to JGSales or AIM and get a WASR-2. I have one. It can do 3-4inch groups at 100 yards offhand and is pretty well made. They're only like $289. You could even "splurge" and buy Wolf ammo with it for that price.

AK-74s are all the fun of an AK-47 but with the recoil of an electric type-writer.

I had a AK-74 clone built from a Romanian Romak II in 5.45. I also bought two Polish Tantal kits and had one built up on a U.S receiver. They are both a blast to shoot. The folding stock on the Tantal is cool, but the AK-74 is a spitting image of the current issue Russian weapon which is the look I was going for. I've got a Russian Kobra scope on the 74 which is also very cool.

Uhg, now I'm wanting a yugo M70 underfolder in 7.62x39! I can afford the gun now, and I've already got about 500 rounds for it because I have an SKS.

Is the yugo going to be significantly less accurate than the '74 clone? I need to quit being a cheap@$$ and save my money, but buying another caliber makes me cry....even if ammo is dirt cheap.

Oh, and thanks for the link to rapidfire, I like their rifles and that polymer stock 74 is calling my name!

I have to say that my SAR-2 is a much better rifle that I ever expected for the price.It's been a pleasant surprise.

Prices of AR15-type rifles are reliably low in the CURRENT market.
These rifles are very, very accurate.

For a "good" (meaning better than a WASR-2) 5.45x39 Kalashikov-type rifle, you are going to start getting into money very close to what you would pay for an AR15.

I think the high-end Tantal guns, and even the cheap WASR-2 guns, are cool things to have in a collection. But, if I had to choose between that sort of gun an an AR15, even if the AR15 were a couple hundred bucks more, I would choose the AR15 in an instant.

I've never fired a -74 but I have fired a Century Yugo with the non-chromed barrel. We put a peep sight on it. It's an accurate rifle.
