Greetings all.

Have been lurking in this area for a while, prior to purchasing my first SG. All I needed to do was lurk for my information

Ended up finding a used (Seemed to be mostly a closet queen, barely shot) Mossy 500A for $115.

I have function tested the gun with #8 birdshot, primarily because that is what I am limited too at my home range. Hence my question.

I seem to be having trouble finding ranges in N. CA that will allow me to shoot anything over #8 and under slugs. Primarily I want to test out various sizes of buckshot and determine function, recoil, patterning etc, so I know what to keep with the thing. Plus, I need to practice.

So is it usual for ranges not to allow the use of buck shot? If so, what do people do to get around it. I could go to BLM land, but that is fairly far. I am in the Sacramento CA area, so if anyone knows anywhere to go, let me know.

I've wondered that myself, should buckshot be shot on the patterning portion of the trap field, or the rifle range? My cousin and I ended up trying our shotguns out in the gravel pit/canyon that serves as the fallout zone for the clay field at my range as we werent sure (and we also wanted to pattern our shotguns with birdshot).

Been a while since I've lived in the area, but the Yolo Bypass was a popular area for hunting and shooting at one time. Used to shoot at a quarry on the east side of Folsom Lake, too. Lots of places east of Auburn or Placerville.

I remember one 4th of July outside of Rattlesnake Bar on Folsom lake (name of a place NOT a drinking estab.!) I discharged both barrels of a 12ga sawed off 30years ago into a 5' dia. granite boulder about 50' awy. Unfortunately a cabin 200' away and almost 90 degrees was peppered and the (good looking) hillbilly girl and the guy she was with did not appreciate it one bit:eek:   Another lesson learned when I was young! Buckshot BOUNCES!!!!!!!!:what:
