Can anyone give me a good location, preferably open public/private land and not an official range, to shoot out to 500 yards with centerfire rifles in the Kansas area. I'm willing to drive 3 to 4 hours in any direction to do this and am in Eastern KS.

Thanks.

next weekend, there is a PRS match in MO. It is advertised on tacticalmatches.com and snipershide.com and precisionrifleseries.com

go to one of those, contact the match director and ask if you can come help.

the weekend after that, he is hosting a "new shooter" match, which is the same course of fire, but less competitive and probably with bigger targets. you should sign up and shoot in that.

edited to add: i'm shooting in the match this coming weekend, though I don't expect to be very competitive as I have been shooting AR15s all winter and barely even looked at my precision rifle since the finale in december. (and some of the best shooters in the country will be there)

I have little precision rifle experience and am looking to play around with my rifles so I'm looking for something less structured, thanks though. I also have to get familiar with a new scope I recently purchased for my primary rifle.

My understanding is that Kansas and Missouri are so flat you could shoot from your basement and never have the bullet hit the ground :D
Kansas maybe...Missouri? Not at all.

We've a diversity of geographics here.

Kansas, flat as the proverbial pancake.

I'm north of St. Joe a few miles. Plenty of places to get all the distance you need. Let me know.

Actually, Kansas is remarkably rolling. It LOOKS flat, but that's an optical illusion... just try hunting white tail sometime on a "flat as pancake" piece of Kansas. They will sneak right by your in the ravines, slight rises, mounds, or whatever. And it's not just deer. I was a tanker at Fort Riley, KS. One thing I learned is that you can hide a tank even in the flattest seeming parts. The changes in the terrain aren't as pronounced as other places, but that actually works to your advantage as people assume that they would see everything, which is wrong.

Regarding where to shoot long distance... I'm HEARD that you can shoot crazy distances (at prairie dogs, if you wish) in Cimarron National Grasslands. It's at the very southwest border of Kansas, though, so might be too long of a drive for you. Otherwise, you could try many of the large lakes dotting Kansas. Cheney Reservoir, for example, has public hunting land and there are many places you could set up a 500 yard shot. I'm sure some of the others are the same (Clinton Lake, perhaps? by Lawrence...)
