Where to shoot rifles in Northern Illinois

Hello everyone, I just bought my second rifle and I ran into a problem, this rifle is a saiga in 5.45, my first rifle was a rimfire .22(marlin 60). The problem is I cant finds anywhere to shoot in northern illinois(near crook county, will county)
Specifically near joliet il.

Can anyone help me find a secret place or something?

There is the Aurora Sportsmans Club (http://www.aurorasc.org), 50 feet - 600 yards, but its private and expensive. The only near by public rifle ranges i know of are

Join the Illinois State Rifle Assoc and it's range - - http://www.isra.org/

Range is at Bonfield, maybe 35-40 miles from Joliet/Plainfield. 2 pistols ranges, 2 100 yd rifle and a 200 - 300 rifle with pits. Also shotgun, bows, numerous club activities, etc. I shoot HP weekly and pistol a couple of times a month.

many parts of chicago and its surroundings frequently experience gunfire and it will be unlikely to be reported to the police.

I wasn't planning on it. I just need a place to shoot. There must be a place people go around here but they are hiding it.

No, there isn't ... we don't have BLM lands nor "wide open spaces" as you'll find in the southwest. Nearest, non-membership, general plinking at 100 yds ranges are just over the border into Indiana. Google the IN DNR for border counties.

If you are in Joliet, then Buffalo is not a bad place to go. You are 30+ miles closer to Buffalo than I am. I am also a member at the ASC which is a bit of a drive for me as well.

go over to illinoiscarry.com and join the forum and ask your question there. several folks there with private ranges have been pretty generous especially for new shooters.

Ill second Buffalo, I am also orginally from the Joliet area and thats were a buddy of mine and I go. Biggest problem I have is that I currently reside in Oak Park (just as dumb as Chicago) so I will have to leave my black rifles, when I get them, at my parents house. Off topic i know but were did you get your Saiga?

Oh when I was in Nebraska visiting family.

I'm reluctant to go to buffalo because its a far drive but I guess thats my only option!

Join the ASC. my gf lives in Joliet. It's about 50 miles. McMillers would be about 110 miles. The beauty of the the club is you get keys and shoot when YOU want. Lots of organized activities ,idpa ,practical rifle,classes. Just lowered dues to $280 @ year. Expensive? Maybe...but go to Gat guns or megasports once a month and you have the same amount. I used to drive all over S Wisconsin and northern IL to shoot different guns, rifle,shotguns,pistol...ASC is one stop shopping.
