I'm looking to buy my first shotgun for trap and skeet shooting. I was looking at the Remington 1187 12 gauge Primier. Is this a good choice? Why would I want the 28" over the 30" barrel? Your opinions please.

I use the 11-87 for both games, it is set up more as a skeet gun than a trap gun. You really have to cover the trap birds up or you will shoot under them. I prefer to use a 30" barrel with skeet choke for skeet and a mod or full for trap. I also have a 26" barrel that I rarely use, but get it out occasionaly for new shooters. The 30" barrel on the gun just barely fits in the safe because of it's length.

I have dedicated guns for both games, a Beretta 862 Supersport tubed gun for skeet, and a Win Mod. 12 trap gun for trap.

Some people have had problems with the 11-87 and malfunctions. I have had the occasional glitch from light loads in the ammo I use, but never had any problems that would make me get rid of mine. ANd I sometimes go 500-600 rounds before cleaning it other than wiping down the outside.

Another gun that I would recommend is Beretta 391.

The 11-87 had some QC issues when first brought out, and since it was expected to replace the super reliable 1100, those gave it a rep for being finicky and junk. Not true.

These days I favor longer barrels for clay stuff, but anything from 26 to 30" should give you good service.

HTH....
