I'm looking at replacing the mag-well mainspring housing on my TRP with one that does NOT have the mag-well. I'm looking at several replacements including Ed Brown, Cylinder and Slide, etc.

Anyone have an opinion on which would be the best drop-in piece? Also bang for buck, and ones that come with all the internal springs etc pre-installed?

I like the Ed Brown mainspring houseings, but any of them will work. I don't know of any that come with the parts. You will need a spring and a mainspring housing pin retainer and a mainspring cap and a mainspring cap pin. You can get a pin set and get them all together.

Midway has them. Other places do as well.

It really depends on if you like your grip or not, a straight housing, an arched, a V-grip, checkering or scaled, or chain pattern, i have found there are relatively few actual "drop in" parts for most guns, but most parts are advertised as such, I installed a wilson v-grip housing on my kimber, but had to file a small amount of material on the inside flat of the top part above the hammer rib cup to allow the grip safety to fully disengage, relatively easy. Im happy with it now, mutch better than the stock plastic one, and it helps to keep your hand in place high on the grip safety to recover quicker from recoil

Me, I like both - have had both....but I go w/ the fitted models for better function and asthetics. If I had to choose between the 2, I'd go w/ the Brown parts ;)

Don't forget Ebay!

The list of 1911 suppliers is endless. As for recomendations, just avoid the generics. The fit and feel are so personal that it's important to be able to get exactly what you want. I once purchased a mainspring housing and the chekering was so sharp I thought it was going to turn my palm to hamburger. I had to hit it with emery cloth to make it usable. I believe that Fusion offers a complete kit with all the parts, and they are a very fair, up and comming company, a spin-off of the Dan Wesson legacy.
