s&w. carbon steel. higher cap. mags will be cheaper, easier to find. external ejector, fully adjustable rear site. positive mag bottom feel. ambi safety.

What are you planning on doing with the gun? And what do you expect from the gun? What do you want the gun to do?

I like Springfield Armory personally but I have heard good things about the Smith and Wesson 1911s. Its hard to make this decision without any more information.

Prefer Colt, but not a choice here

I prefer Colt, but it's not a choice here. As such, I would say S.A.

What a trigger!!!!!!

i just want a reliable gun with good appearances and easy to take care of.
i wont be using this gun for carry, will be for of a show gun. what i mean by that is shoot about 100 through it and put it away.

i see many Wilson and Ed Brown triggers on eBay and I just want to know how easy it would be to replace that SW trigger by myself. thanks for the help guys!

also like to know what these guns are going for at gunshows. thanks!

Actually target shooters learned long ago that there are advantages to a flat-faced trigger. You are more likely to pull it straight back, and this results in a more uniform shot-to-shot trigger pull.

Does look awfull though... :(

More to the point, the Springfield Armory pistol is a more basic one, where the particular S&W is a loaded-with gadgets play-toy. Which is beter depends on the intended use.

Note: In the case of the S&W it is easy to swap out the trigger for a more... ah... conventional one. :)

Both are usually discounted from the MSRP. Go to several shops in your area and ask for a cash bid on whichever you want (or both). That is if you can pay cash - which will get you the very best price.

Also check out gunshows (usually overpriced, but some dealers will come way down for cash) and Internet auction sites.

Just checking...

Checking if the original poster knows that the S&W shown is the Doug Koenig edition, not the regular S&W 1911. The regular 1911's have a normal curved/skeletonized trigger. Also, the DK model is about $100 more than the regular S&W 1911. The main difference between the two pistols is that S&W uses an external extractor and SA uses an internal. Never heard anything bad about either.
They both have good frames, they both use some MIM parts, one is made in the US and one is partially made in Brazil (if that matters, it doesn't to me).
I, myself, prefer the S&W (never shot an SA, only fondled them). To me, the S&W just "felt" a little better. Then again, maybe it's my 642 trying to subconciously influence me... ~Nathan

SA has no firing pin safety goombah and an internal extractor. In other words, it's a gen-yooo-wine 1911 pattern pistol.

The S&W can't say that.

Colt is not an option here, which is what I own, so My second choice would definitely be the Springer, the basic 1911.

I'm w/ my brothers that have already stated their preference to Colt :) But since it's not an option, I'd go w/ the Springer

I picked the S&Wdk and love it you get used to the strait trigger in no time. It is my favorite 1911.

Mags don't matter, assuming both are properly made to 1911 specs, ANY 1911 mag should work in either. Both have ambi-safety, and more importantly, Springfield Armory didn't sell out Chairman Clinton. Besides, the trigger on the S&W is just plain ugly. ;)

I'd go with the springer personally. But get the straight trigger installed if you plan on shooting it much.

Big Gay Al - The trigger may be ugly, but try the staraight trigger on a 1911 and you'll love it. Much better controllability as finger placement doesn't seem to matter as much.

Like many others I go with a Colt. But since you left that out then Springer Trigger on S&W could be replaced but not that extractor. Even Kimber is going back to the orginal design. Besides I still remember Smith sold out. I have old Rev but nothing new.

... Springfield ... I have 2 right now, and have sold 2 before, all 100% reliable, Great Customer service

I would go with the Springer i have the same one and it was edc till i bought a colt combat commander ..

Had a smith 1911 when they came out and after 800 rounds it had pretty much tore its self aprt.. might have been teething pains but made em swear off smith 1911's

I'll vote for...

The Springer. I can't get used to the external extractor thing. I've had 2 Kimbers with the external extractor, so I've given them a chance. My biggest gripe was difficulty in reassembly when taking apart the slide during the occasional deep cleaning. :banghead: You need 3 hand for that work. I've also heard good things about the Smiths, but I'd still go for the SA. If it ain't broke......

:scrutiny:

Pick the one you like. For the money, though, the Smith is a lot of gun. Well fitted, nice trigger. I almost bought one a few months ago. Didn't because, like yeah, I need (?) another 1911...

Eventually, I will get a S&W 1911
