I have been given the choice between a Springfield Armory 1911 Compact Carry (model V10) 45acp, in SS finish.... OR a Glock 24 in .40 cal.

The Glock is a model 24...not a "c" model. This handgun may not be in production any more, as it's not on Glock's website.
* Also, can this model 24 be converted into a shorter barreled version? Obviously, a new shorter barrel and slide would have to be purchased.

Which one would you choose and why?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

The Springfield. I don't really have a need or want for a Glock with a mile long barrel & slide.

What is your plans for it.
Carry or just sport shooing?
I have 17L (9mm) and love it.
But I do not have a compact 1911 do have a commander though.
Oh btw 6" is not that long.

if your planning on doing IDPA or some other regulated game, the 24 (and the 17L) dont fit in many of the games "size boxes" for whatever they would call the stock or prodution class, youd be pretty much stuck in unlimited or whatever
thats why they now make the 34 and 35 (slide is a bit shorter), which do fit in the boxes of IDPA, USPSA, and IPSC etc..

Can't really help on your decision. I'm a Glock guy but Your-mileage-may-vary. It's hard to guess if either one will make "collector" status anytime soon.

With a new slide and barrel you can make the G24 into a G35 or G22 pretty easy. The frame is the same size as the G24.

Also there is the option of changing calibers..a little more work and you could add drop-in357Sig barrels to the top ends as well.

9mm probably could be done but it's a few more parts changes and 100% reliability my be tough.

Good Luck

I would probably opt for the Springfield as I really don't have much use for a .40 cal. Glock long slide.

I don't know how all these people answered 1911 so quickly, when you haven't even defined the use of the gun yet. Even if one doesn't like Glocks, this particular Glock will beat the pants off this particular 1911 in any type of target shooting.

Likewise, as a carry gun, the 1911 is the better choice, unless you plan on open carrying it.

The G24 is a rarer gun and is the one I'd take in this case. If it was between the Springfield a a more common Glock like a 19 there might be more contention, but between these two you're looking at a more prized rarer specimen vs a run of the mill carry gun.

The Glock 24 is still in production, but because there's little demand for it since the G35 was released, Glock only makes a run of G24's and G17L's every few years.

The G24 uses the exact same frame and magazines that the G35 and G22 use. You could buy a slide and barrel for either one of those models and put it on the G24 frame. All three models even use the same guide rod.

I'd be just as perplexed trying to decide between the two, but because I already own a few Glocks and I have my eye on my first 1911, a stainless nonetheless, I'd probably choose the Springfield.

I'd take the Springfield ... if nothing else its worth almost twice as the Glock.

As for swapping out uppers on the Glock ... Glocks are like legos and the parts are heavily interchangeable.

Whichever one would sell for more. I wouldn't care to own either gun (I do not like or trust any 1911 that isn't full size, and I hate Glocks chambered in .40)

Thank you, for your replies, gentlemen! :)

The SA 45acp would be a CCW and the Glock 24....well, I could use it as a varmint hunting handgun, but it's too ballistically weak of a cartridge for deer. I don't compete, so that's out and the barrel is too long to think of being able to hide it as a CCW.

I'm leaning toward the SA 1911, because I'm more familar with them. Also, I already own a Smith & Wesson M&P, in 9mm and it's a tack driver.

1911 all the way. They hold value better, and shoot better IMO. There are a gazillion glocks out there. Most people hold onto a 1911 for a reason.

I agree that the Glock is a great gun but I wouldn't choose any gun without trying it first.

Glocks are not for everyone (I like mine), and I have tried every XD made and only liked the full size .45 version.

Go rent each one, I have friends that will buy on impulse without trying the gun first and in many cases they are safe queens now.

I use every gun I have and will not part with them ever.

Dafish2011,
I've already fired both of these handguns and have decided on the SA 1911 Compact Carry. This is an early inheritance gift and I was given the choice between the two. :D

I was in shock, as you might imagine, when I was given the choice. Just the same, the Springfield will be my new CCW.
