I'm about to receive a little extra cash and am going to buy a full size 1911. I'm considering three choices in three price ranges. 1. Springfield loaded 2. Kimber Tactical 3. Wilson CQB I'm looking for comments on all three and anyones imput about if the increased prices are worth it. Is a Wilson CQB really that much better than a springfield?

PM 1911Tuner and Old Fuff and ask them. Not having owned any of the three, my vote would go for the Wilson. I tend toward basics, and to me a Springfield (or anybody's) "Limited" version is a cheaper gun with "stuff" added on to raise the price. I think you're better off going with someone who doesn't offer a cheap version, 'cause then you pretty much know that you're not buying a gussied-up cheap pistol.

Zero problems with my Kimber or my Springfield, with the exception of the 2 peice guide rod in the Springfield coming apart, but used one piece or GI style setups are easy to find and cheap.

No experience with a Wilson or similar, but if the "cheap" guns work well and last, why bother?

I've got 4 Kimbers.
The last being the Tactical Ultra. Simply one of the best pistols I've ever owned.
If I knew of a better gun I'd buy it.

A friend has five Kimbers and a $2,000 Wilson. He says he would like to have the $2,000 back so he could buy two more Kimbers.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments. I'm really leaning towards the Kimber right now. I just can't convince myself that double the price for the Wilson will make that much difference.

what about a para-ordnance?

I wasn't really fond of the Wilson, sold it for a Kimber, sold the kimber to get the 686 shotgun I wanted - but couldn't begin to part with the any of the 3 para-ordnance pistols I have. 2 P-14 & a P-12 which will VERY soon be joined by a P-16 (40 cal :uhoh: ) LDA model. I think the world of these pistols . The double action (sort of) LDA model is trick, and has the smoothest-shortest trigger pull I've checked in awhile. The springfield in my marine buddy's possession is fine by him and he was a range instructor- so go figure.......

I havce had very bad experiences with two out of 3 Kimbers. Springfield was ok, just some minor issues. The 1911 that has worked out best for me,has been my box stock Colt 1991A1. Feeds everything I have put into it, 100% reliable, and extremely accurate to boot. The Kimber that has worked for me, is used Series I.

With the Wilson budget you're talking about, I'd buy a Colt Series 70, and send it to a good shop for a nice makeover and massage.

I have an SW1911 that was great out of the box, but is currently getting work done on it to make it better. I'm having the slide & frame flats polished, front sight drilled & painted, and the action will be trimmed to @ 4lbs.

"MHO" these days is to get a good basic 1911 like a Springer Mil-Spec, and then hook up with a good gunsmith to get it set up exactly the way you want it. My friend has one, he had about $200.00 worth of quality upgrades done to it, and it is just an awesome "old-school" 1911. I want one like it, everybody who has seen it and shot it wants one like it.

You shouldn't spend the extra money if you don't know what you are getting for it, or can't tell the difference. That's just common sense.

The Wilson has some objective advantages: better quality parts made of better steels, and a gun that is more accurate, more reliable and more durable on average than a Kimber. It has subjective advantages: nicer fit and finish, smoother trigger pull, and so forth.

Personally, the Wilson is not how I'd spend $2,000 on a gun. For that kind of money, I want EXACTLY what I want, not an off-the-shelf approximation.

Then again, my custom guns don't look like other people's idea of a custom gun. :D

Go for the Kobra carry and don't look back---you won't ever need to trade up or down! :D

I think a Colt is the best way to go for that kinda money. Especially something like previously mentioned, a Series 70 or 80. It probably won't go down in value.
