Which .22 To Get

I am going to buy a .22 for aproximately $100 and I am debating between the following Savage, Marlin or Mossberg. Both the Savage and the Mossberg use magazines and have synthetic stocks. The marlin is tube fed and has a wooden stock. I like the magazines. And, I like the wood stock. This rifle will be used for plinking/target shooting.

Edit: I bought the Marlin. I also had them mount a scope and bore sight it.

Whatever you do Do NOT buy the savage (if it is the one that they sell at big 5) I used to work there and that was the only gun they sold that ever got returned, and it happened every week.

the chambers are made of soft steel, and they develop burs which do not allow the cartridge to seat fully, but, amazingly enough, it still alows it to fire, which blows out of the gun sideways, one guy had a nasty cut on his face from it (left handed shooter)

the marlin is a good gun, I used to have one, great accuratcy, good reliability, and unless you are going to buy a bunch of extra clips for the mossberg, a tube fed won't slow you down too much.

Model 60

Marlin Model 60 is a true rimfire classic. You'll eventually come to love the high capacity tubular magazine that does not stick out of the rifle and mess up the carrying characteristics. And you will start out loving the accuracy and reliability of the Model 60. It might be the best value in a .22 rifle today, it's for sure a contender for that honor.

Remington 597 w/3rd generation magazine... $125 new... out of the box: quite accurate... I'd say on par with the Marlin 60...

The Ruger 10/22 is $160 at Academy. These others are $100-$110. I'm using BDay money to buy this.

I might be mistaken, but I think Academy had an ad in Thursday's paper for the 10/22 @ $124.

If I was wrong, I also have a Marlin 60 and have never had a problem with it. It is the older model with a mag tube that holds 19 LR. A magazine was never a second thought. It is still accurate.

Now if you had a 10/22 and a 597 on the list...

I believe the Marlin 60 to be the best semi automatic .22lr under 200 dollars.

Why no Ruger option?

'Cause they cost more and aren't nearly as accurate out-of-the-box

I recommend the Taurus. They are making two models which were originally made by Winchester in its hayday, both designed, I believe, by John Browning, and they are both excellent. I have one of each. One's a semi auto and the other's a pump action. Alternatively, if you can still find one, the Winchester 94/22 is an excellent little rifle that will last several lifetimes.

I also have a Ruger 77/22 which is excellent.

Marlin model 60. If you look around a little you can find used for way under a hundred bucks. I found a like new in a pawn shop for $ 80.00.

excellent rifle..

best darn .22 LR rifle on the market for around a $100 is the Marlin 795 clip fed carbine. love mine, it was accurate out of the box, decent trigger pull and so light i could carry it all day with no problems. does great with squirrel and rabbit! -Eric
