The 40 S&W is a good cartridge and I would like to stick with it. The problem I have is that the recoil is very snappy and as a result my accuracy suffers. It looks like I need a heavy gun to help tame the recoil. Any suggestions?

I'm really not trying to be clever here, but if you can't shoot .40S&W well because of the round's noted snap and torque (.40s do seem to twist in the hand) - you should switch to 9mm.

A quality 9mm +P JHP gives you everything a .40 does, and you will be better able to hit what you're aiming at, plus practice more (lower cost, lower recoil = more practice).

If you really need a low recoil .40, the solution is a larger gun with a polymer frame - the USP .40 full size HK's excellent two stage recoil spring is about as good as it gets. The SiGPro is also a notably soft .40 to shoot.

Good luck.

my sig 229 produces less felt recoil than my xd-40 or glock 35. its pretty soft recoiling, especially compared to the xd, which has a lot of bite.

Either go up or go down.

I didn't mind .40 S&W and I still like the round, but after trying .45 ACP for about a month, I was hooked.

This is all out of an XD, which tames felt recoil better than any other semiauto I've tried. I mention that so you know the only difference was the cartridge, not the gun.

CZ 75B -- least recoiling .40 that I have shot.

Another option is to get a Sig P226, and put rubber hogue grip panels on it. The rubber slightly tames the bite out of the .40.

Having said this, I ditto the opinion of the posters that recommend switching to 9mm (or .45 acp). I see no reason to use a .40 if the recoil bothers you.

I've gone through a few fourties and found the perfect platform in a Sig P226ST stainless.
It does have a high bore axis which minimizes the slap against the web of the hand, and enough weight so muzzle flip isn't a problem.
I think it is a little softer than the H&K USP .40, which would be my second choice in a .40s&w.
I did not care for Glocks in that caliber.
In a Glock give me a 9mm or a .45acp.

The Sig 226ST in .40 makes a lot of sense, given the heigh weight of the gun. I'd recommend adding the Hogue rubber grip panels.

Test-fire a S&W M&P40. To me, it seems like shooting a 9mm.

I really liked the XD40 I shot, it was the ported V-10 model. It didnt recoil any worse than my Ruger P345, with soft target reloads. The only thing I didnt like was all the flash you get out of the ports. I could shoot the XD40 just as well as a gun I've put thousands of rounds through.:)

9mm or hand load your own .40's. The M&P 40 shoots great, but the recoil is still "snappy". If it is a range gun and you don't want to load your own, I've found Ultramax reloads tend to be softer than WWB.

Of the 40's I've owned or shot, I preferred the Beretta 96. I would think tho that something steel & fullsized would help decrease perceived recoil...good luck on your quest

HK USP full size 40 was very nice for me, but with 165gr ranger SXT's my hat is of to the beretta 8040 cougar. That round is a truely hot round:evil: . With the wallyworld CCI blazer BRASS 180gr loads the cougar has less percieved recoil than a glock 17~ according to my honey.

stick with 180gr loads 950fps range

Federal Hydrashock 135gr 1125-1150fps would be another good option feels like shooting 9mm with the Fed load.

Steyr M40 has lowest bore axis of them all with a steel subframe inside polymer grip which helps with recoil compared to other polymer guns. you may want to avoid 150-155 loads back when I was recoil sensitive they were worst. I now shoot Full House 40sw loads. Steyr has less snap of any polymer 40sw pistol I have shot

otherwise you may need metal frame. Baby Eagle,CZ,Sig,1911,Hi Power.
I hear good things about the Hi Powers in 40sw afraid to shoot one as I may have to purchase one if what everyone says about them holds true.

keep shooting your recoil sensitivity may go away mine did. 45acp might be good option the recoil is not snappy I recently fired 1911 in 45acp it was sweet recoil.
