I'm starting to entertain the thought of adding a .40 S&W. so here's the deal

I currently own an hk45c and p2000sk(9mm).

I'd like to keep the cost under 800 bux and preferably around the size of a p2000sk... or at least something smaller than an hk45c

If it comes w/ a free .357 barrel, that's awesome... but unnecessary

so.. what are some guns I should try w/ reliability being #1?

I've already got these on the list:
xd40, xd40c
g23 + g26? (whichever is the 3-finger .40)
M&Ps seem popular
sig p229? p239?

some other thoughts:
1) I like the HK designs, but don't like their DA triggers. ppl complain about imbalance, but it feels balanced to me when I have bullets in it
2) My LEM works fine, but wish it were 5lbs instead of 7lb
3) The mag disconnect is great on the hk45c, but can't hit it quite as easily on the p2000sk. I do love how the mag springs itself out though
4) p226 mag release worked fine
5) glock mag release sucked b/c the mag needed a slight tug when empty rather than the weight of the mag helpin it drop out

thx in advance. If I wasn't clear about it, I'm looking to ask what guns I should test in .40. The rest is just fluff to give u an idea of what I like and don't like :D

XDM 40 is great. My favorite is my M&P 40.............wonderfuul natural feel and very accurate. Prices seem good now at around $500.

from your list.... i would go with the sig. mine is super reliable (almost boring).

im a fan of the 40s&w. out of the ones i own/have shot my favorite have been my beretta px4 fs and hk usp's. seriously try the px4 storm if you can rent one. its a great .40cal

I have an XD SC in .40 and really like it. I have a 9MM conversion barrel for it. I don't know if they are making the 3" .357 Sig conversion barrels off hand, but they do make the others.

XD is my choice of those mentioned.

I've got the M&P full size and like it. Three things that sold me the M&P.
  1. Feels great in your hands
  2. The internal metal frame insert the slide rides on.
  3. Made in the USA

If you're looking at the "XD" line, the XDm is a much better choice over the XD IMO. I'm really starting to jones over the XDm.

Things are tight right now but the XDm will likely be my wife's next pistol if money loosens up.

In 40S&W I have a SIG P229 DAK, SIG P239 DAK, and M&P 40 (full and compact).
All have been 100% reliable.
The P239 used to be my primary concealed carry pistol, but it has been replaced by the M&P Compact because it has changeable grip backstraps, is lighter, and holds 3 more rounds.

I just got a SIG SP2022. I've only put 100 rounds through it but I like it so far. You can allso change the grips, 3 different sizes. I'ts easy to control and the sights are a two dot like strieght eight design. Polymer frame so not to heavy. I have to say the trigger is not the best but I'm used to a 1911.

Not to be the silly one here, but why would you add a .40 to the .45 and 9mm? The .40 is a compromise round, IMO, if you have neither a .45 or 9mm. You can do more with a .40, yes, but it's kinda redundant.

I put my money where my mouth is and dumped all of my .40's years ago. Haven't looked back.

Check out the various CZs in .40...I have CZ-75Bs in 9-mm Luger and .40 S&W. Very comfortable grip, medium size, extremely reliable, accurate, and costs about $400 to $450. No problems after five years of shooting about 4 times/month.:D

Bought a new EZ-40, imported by European American Arms (EAA), a couple of weeks ago...a rather attractive and apparently well-made pistol. However, on the ninth shot the front sight disappeared, and I was unable to locate it!:what: I believe the wrong sight blade had been installed, as when the white dot on the front sight was lined up with the dots on the rear sight, the top of the front sight was very noticably lower than the top of the rear sight. (Gun has been returned...):barf:

Sig P229

I have recently added the Sig P229 SAS in .40SW. Got the custom shop modified version of the P229, all black, with the night sights. I think this will be my primary hand gun from this point forward. The .40SW DRT is still available - bought 5 boxes today. That round in .40SW should be about the best you can do with a semi-auto.

My only concern is that the .40 SW rounds are more expensive to practice with than either .45 or 9mm, particularly the DRT's (~$70/50 at CTD). The size and weight of the .40 is very similar to the P220 .45, though, and I hope practiced proficiency with the .45 will suffice. Bulk ammo for the .40 is back ordered.

Can't comment on the other hand guns you mentioned, but I don't think you will go wrong with the Sig P229. My (large) hand didn't seem to want to put it down after the first time I picked it up. First weapon I have owned with the tritium night sights -- why the heck didn't I do that earlier?! ;):)

badger - to answer your question. I've always intended on buyin a 9, .40, and .45 b/c I view those as the three popular pistol rounds. It's not about compromise or self defense to me

HUGE fan of my M&P .40 my only complaint is that there are not as many holsters and accessories available for it as I would wish. I am very much considering getting a threaded 9mm conversion barrel for it. Just to save money plinking.

I own M&P's. Never had a problem. Easy to clean. Very soft shooters. Accurate, reliable, and very comfortable.
