I voted for the 29/629 MG but honestly the difference between the tapered barrel and the straight barrel (without full underlug) is not that great, either in weight or in handling.

I voted 4" Ruger. Just wish it had a full underlug like the 4" GP100. But any of the guns listed are fine.

Another vote for the 629 Classic 5" full underlug.

Yes, it's a little more weight to tote than the mountain gun. But not so much as to be prohibitive unless you are a lightweight yourself.

The full underlug helps manage the recoil, the extra 1" of barrel helps realize the awesome potential of the 44 magnum round. If you encounter large game, you will be glad to have every inch of that potential working for you. The 6" is probably overkill for a handgun, but suit yourself on that score.

I have to confess I love the way the 629 classic looks so solid and balanced. It is a joy to shoot, a real *****cat with 44 specials.

I voted for the 629 4" Mountain gun, but I own the 629 4". The reason for the vote is my newly purchased 57 4" mountain gun goes with me everyday I'm in the woods or on the 4 wheeler. We learn from our mistakes but I still enjoy the 4" 629. I do hunt with my 7 1/2 inch vaquero or my 5 1/2 inch Redhawk.

I voted for the 4" Ruger. I own a 6" 629 and it is a great gun. It has served me well for hunting deer and hogs. However, I plan on purchasing the 4" Ruger later this year for a elk hunting trip in MT (bear country). The 629 is great, but it is too heavy and cumbersome to carry up and down a mountain. Also, the Ruger is a stronger action. Yes, this will raise a few opinions, but you can shoot the heavy Garrett Hammerheads through it and not the 629. For protection, where you have to carry it on your hip, I vote for the 4" Ruger.

The Ruger is indeed stronger. But if the weight of the 4" 629 is too much, you're not going to love the 4" Redhawk. The 4" Redhawk weighs a couple ounces more than my 5", full underlug 629 Classic. That strength comes at a bit of a price.

Well, since nobody mentioned the Ruger Alaskan,

That should be on the list as well. I'm not a big fan of the short .454's, but at 2 1/2 lbs you can really have fun with .44's out of the Alaskan. It also uses the same lockwork as an SP, so it's less complex than the Redhawk.

How much velocity is lost out of the Alaskan vs. the 4" Redhawk? I have considered it as well, but thought the 4" might be a little better, but not too much bigger.

I would go with the 629 5" Classic if I was limiting myself to this list, if not, I would pick up a used Dan Wesson 744 6" from one of the auction sites.

There's also the CZ/Dan Wesson Alaskan Guide Special. If you reload, you can find some .445 Supermag brass and get some extra oomph out of it. Even if you don't, it's an extra-large framed gun that'll handle the heaviest loads. The extra cylinder length will be good for the very heavy bullet (in excess of 300 grains) loads.

I really like the 4"Ruger Redhawk. A friend of mine that's a class3 dealer bought a few and I had the chance to check it out, man is it stoutly built! I am a big fan and proud owner of several older, non-lawyer lock S&Ws. I just can't bring my self to buy one of the newer ones.
I asked S&W why one can purchase one of the new M&P autopistols with or without a mag safety and/or a lock on the frame, yet us wheelgunners have no choice in the lock/no lock matter. He told me, in a very snotty manner, they had no plans at all to produce any revolvers without locks in the future...I replied that niether I nor anyone I know had any plans to buy S&W's new revolvers in the future. Ruger or older S&W, both are excellent!

IMHO a .44 mag has too much recoil and far too much potential to fire in DA I pack a super blackhawk as a bear gun. I load 300 grain hornady XTP's with 19.5 grains of H110 I haven't used the chrono yet but I'd say I am geting about 1100 fps ou tof my 5.5 inch barrel.

Not on the list but I am a big fan of the lighter weights.

Great shooter. A little hard on the hands with full magnum loads though :)

For all day carrying in the woods this thing is so light I don't even notice it.

Of the list, the 4" 629 would be my choice.

Im not very knowledged in the field of revolvers but i chose the 629 in 6 inch just cause i can get the most velocity out of it. Plus s&w makes nice guns.

I've been working with my 4" Redhawk lately and with about 300 rounds through it so far I have to say I love this gun. Dead accurate, feels great, excellent trigger and very good on the fit and finish.

I know a few people who have bought them and not liked them but I'm sold on it with no reservations.
