Looking to maximize available rounds in 9 mm, but must be concealable, fat grip OK (i.e. none of the assult or tactical type pistols with 36 inch magazine etc), and dont want any plastic guns either. What are my choices?

ruling out "plastic" guns is really going to cut down your options.

If you do consider polymer, a glock 19 holds 15+1 and is fairly easy to conceal.

A CZ 75B fullsize or compact with an SP01 19rd magazine might fit your requirements.

If you can find an Astra A-100 (or A-90 or A-80) laying around somwhere, you'll have 17 in the mag...

The guns are all steel, are not particularily small, and are not very light...

But they're great guns...

That Steyr GB also locks up tighter than a miser's fist on occasion. Neat pistol but when it 'jams' it literally has to cool off and it's very ammo sensitive.

You can get a flush-fit (or nearly so) 15 rd magazine for a Browning Hi-Power. BHP has a skinny slide and a grip that can wear thin panels to reduce its profile.

CZ/Witness are great pistols too.

"Miser's Fist"

Ohh, come on. I know you could have thought of something a little, ummm, more colorful (probably did but didn't post it right).

Your no tupperware limits your choices a little, but I'd say a widebody 1911 might work chambered in 9 or 38 super... If you lift the no plastic requirement, then check out the Beretta PX4 - factory 17 & 20 round magazines that are available. The 17 rounders are identical in length to a regular 92 magazine, and the 20 rounders are simply 17 rounders with a small extension on it and a revised spring.

SIG P226 15 + 1
best 9mm going
+1 on the P226 :)
You can also get the Mec-Gar mags (Sig's OEM) that hold 17 rounds and don't protrude; they use a slightly different spring so you can two additional rounds in the space of a standard 15. :)

Does a Glock 17 hold 17rds? I think you can get +2 extensions to make it 19rds. If I were looking for the most 9mms in a gun, that is probably what I would go with. That is until they make a XD-9 mag that holds 17-20 rds.

My Beretta 92FS holds 20+1 and that is with FACTORY mags not the Pro-Mag BS that you see around most of the time. I keep that for HD and it makes me feel good. I think 15+1 is enough most of the time but in a HD gun, I don't have to conceal it so the extra bit of mag sticking out th ebutt doesn't effect anything.

For a carry gun, I want compactness more than firepower. It is nice to have lots of shots but if it is such a big and heavy gun that you won't carry it, what is the point? 7 rds of 9mm is what I normally carry and some of the time 5 rds of .38spl is all that I carry.

As someone else mentioned, fitting flush and current, the Para Ord P18?-9. (18 rounds)

I believe Para makes a doublestack 1911 that holds 18 rounds.
Correct. The P18.9

I don't know how concealable you would judge it, though. The Para double stack grip is in fact only a tiny fraction of an inch thicker than a standard single stack 1911, but the P18.9 is a full-size 1911 with a 5" barrel.

The Beretta PX4 seems like a good choice; in fact any one should suffice. Carry a .45 ACP and .380 concealed but want something in vehicle to satisfy ample target opportunity if ever required (and its not looking good...like it might be best to have one :( ). Many thanks for input.
