Which caliber do you prefer 762x39, 545 and/or 556/223 and why?
I prefer 556/223 myself. I am sure I would like 545 but haven't got one yet. I find it easier to shoot accurately, lower recoiling and readily available.

It is pretty much neck and neck with 223 anymore. You can get 223 wolf, silver/brown bear and assorted surplus.

Quality .223 doesn't even go for $11 in Kansas City anymore. The cheap surplus and stuff from Wolf and Brown Bear will go for $7. But good Remingtion ammo is like, $15 a box now.

Ya, but your shooting it in an AK. Most 7.62x39 is wolf, golden tiger or silver/brown bear. If you want to pay more for federal it costs more. My point is you can get comparable 223 ammo to the 762x39 at a similar price point but that you could still spend more and get match grade 223.

I like x39 because that is what it was originally built for. It is also a nice big caliber that can make a sizable hole and is relatively inexpensive.

How many people have actually fired a 545/556 alongside a 762x39? I wonder if people are a little bias because x39 is more available and the whole x39 setup works and has good aftermarket support. I like AKs but they don't handle the same in different calibers. Nothing against x39 I have more guns in that caliber than anything else but 9mm.

I actually like the .223 one, but my WASR 10 in 7.62x39 has taken more feral hogs in N Texas and Southern OK than I can count...

so my vote goes for the classic...7.62x39--if I can only have one...:)

I have a saiga in .223 but if I could do it again, I would have gone with a 7.62x39. Mags are cheaper and more abundant. That, along with the fact that the AK isn't necessarily a precision rifle, I feel the 7.62 cartridge fits well with it's role. The 5.56 trajectory leaves the round better suited in a more precise platform such as the AR15.

At this moment in time, the 5.45 will allow you to shoot twice as much as the .223 or 7.62. The AK74 is generally regarded to be more accurate than than the AKM/AKS in 7.62x39, possibly because the stress to the receiver is less than the 7.62 round, resulting in less flexing of the action during the shot. My AK74 seems to be about 30% more accurate than my AKM, and flatter shooting. Ammo is is less than $300 for 2160 rounds.

556/223 mags weren't ever standardized by the soviet union or warsaw pact nations. 545 and 7.62x39 were standardized so they are more or less universal, except for the single stacks and some of the saiga specific mags.

Are you talking standard double stacks as in 99% of all AKs on the planet? I read that you are in NJ. I am thinking you have the neutered mag well for import. They do make hicap mags for the neutered saiga mag wells but standard AK mags are wider and won't fit.

i havea sar3 5.56

i love it ,and i have a 7.62 ak and i dont know why but i love my sar3

5.56 cause it's the same caliber as the AR. You don't have to buy different calibers to shoot both guns.
